Two Iron Age gold coins; both staters of Tasciovanus, belonging to the Eastern (North Thames) British Iron Age coinage region and dating to the period 20 BC to AD 10. Eastern British Iron Age coinage is found in the region north of the Thames and to the east, with some coin types issued in Kent. The Northern Thames area is traditionally associated with the Trinovantes and the Catuvellauni tribes, with distribution centering on Essex, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and parts of surrounding counties. Tasciovanus is thought to have issued coinage in his name in the North …

Milton under Wychwood gold stater hoard All five coins are early uninscribed Iron Age gold staters of the so-called "Chute" or "British B" type, produced in c. 80-60 BC. The type is published in the standard catalogue of Iron Age coins: Cottam et al 2010, Ancient British Coinage, no 746. Coins of this type are most commonly found in the Hampshire-Dorset area, so the present findspot is interesting as it is located beyond this area. All of the coins feature an abstract pattern, derived from a head, on the obverse and a stylised left-facing horse on the reverse. The individual coins …

A worn and melted gold disc, probably a Gallo-Belgic A stater. Dimensions: Thickness: 1.9mm; Diameter: 24.2mm; Weight 7.60g Discussion: This item was submitted for consideration as potential Treasure because it was found very close to a previously recorded Roman gold aureus of Trajan (BH-80B838). However, given that the coin is likely to be a Gallo-Belgic A stater dating to the 2nd Century BC, the proximity of its findspot to the gold aureus is thought to be coincidental rather than representational of a group of coins lost at the same time. It therefore falls outside the criter…

The find comprises a 'Gallo-Belgic' Aa class 4 gold quarter stater (cf Sills 2003 279, p.132[1]). Diameter: 14.1mm; thickness: 0.9mm; weight: 1.82g. The flan of the coin is slightly bent. Coins of this type were struck in the Somme valley area of N.W. France in the mid-2nd century BC. They are traditionally attributed to the Ambiani but are more commonly found in Essex and Kent; it has been suggested that this particular type was made for export to Britain. The above coin is clearly more than 300 years old. It is struck from a metal alloy well above the 10% precious metal thresh…
