Treasure case 2006 T430 Description Fragment of gold strip, embossed with four horizontal lines. In one corner there is a piercing, probably deliberate. The long edges have been folded back such that the folded edge appears on the ‘reverse’ side, from which the embossing has been carried out. Maximum length 30mm; maximum width 17mm; thickness less than 0.5mm; weight 1.21 grams. Identification In all likelihood the piece is more than 300 years old. However it is not possible to assign this fragment to a firm cultural or chronological context. Consequently, in terms o…

TREASURE CASE : 2007 T443 Description of Object A small, hollow, sub-rectangular sheet-gold object with two undecorated planar faces. A ribbed moulding - four ribs defined by three channels - runs around one long and two short sides and a slender tubular perforation, formed by the addition of a strip of gold sheet, occupies the fourth side. Gold finger ring with a slightly misshapen hoop, which broadens at the shoulders to meet the bezel. The bezel is comprised of a rectangular red glass to imitate a precious stone, in a rectangular setting. Arched decoration surrounds the setting. The bezel of this ring has close parallels with 2004 T485 (see Treasure Annual Report 2004, no.369), but this ring is a 19th-century imitation of a medieval-style ring. Therefore, this is classed as not Treasure.

A medieval finger ring, hollow cast, with a roughly oval aperture at the bezel. The back of the bezel is open so that the stone it once held would have been in contact with the wearer's skin. This may indicate that the stone was thought to have magical properties. It would have been secured in place by two pins inserted through two small apertures, one at the top and one at the bottom. The external face of the hoop is decorated on the left with a double row of zigzags, which runs into an inscription: IC HOPE (I hope) In the field after the inscription the zigzags are re…

Treasure case : 2008 T700 Gold ring, the hoop broken at the back, formed of a thin flat band, with stylised scrolls at the shoulder, the oval bezel with a monkey in relief. There are traces of white enamel on the shoulders and green and black (?) on the bezel. While this ring conforms to 16th century shape and decoration, the use of a flat hoop and bezel, with metal of this thinness, is extremely unusual and has no parallels in the British Museum collection. While we cannot rule out the possibility that it may be 16th-17th century, the balance of probability is that it is no…

Gold finger ring Date: probably 17th Century Description: A gold finger ring, which has been bent and distorted out of shape. The hoop has a circular section, which widens towards the shoulders. The upper surfaces of the shoulders are decorated with an incised cross-hatched design inside a linear border. The bezel has a wide U-shaped with turned up lips on either side. In the centre of this there is a double claw, which would have held a stone or gem. This is now missing. The claws each have a collar around them. The cross-hatched decoration suggests a date in the 17th Century.

Date: 14th - 15th century A fragment of a medieval gold badge or mount, now damaged and incomplete. On one side, a standing robed figure cradling a baby probably represents the Virgin and Child. The reverse side is difficult to interpret, but may represent a vase decorated with a cross, with what may be foliage radiating from it. The edges of the badge are engraved with fluting, and may once have included stitching holes, for attaching to clothing or as a hat badge.

TREASURE CASE : 2009 T223 Description: Gold finger ring set with a large blue gemstone and red glass cloisonné. The central cabochon gem is surrounded by four triangular cells. Where these meet, small round cells have been set. Three of these round cells still contain minute granular inlays, although it is impossible to determine whether they are glass pastes, glass or gem stones. A short, straight cell wall emanates from each roundel and meets the corners of the outer, square frame of the bezel, thus bisecting the space between the triangles. Glass slips are still present in on…
