TREASURE CASE: 2011 T742. Description: Gold object made from a piece of sheet folded in half and originally found in one piece, but now broken at the fold into two halves. Both halves are flat and circular, approximately 14mm in diameter, with a projection quickly tapering to 2.5mm wide. These projections were originally linked at a fold at the top so that each circular half rested on top of each other. Each half has a straight cut across the edge opposite the fold, so that it appears that the piece of gold sheet was folded in half and then the projections and circles were cut out t…

TREASURE CASE : 2011 T741. A medieval finger-ring with a convex hoop set with a bezel in the shape of a padlock, which is soldered on to the hoop of the ring. The shoulders are decorated with irregular panels cross-hatched, probably to receive enamel, with a device that resembles a two-pronged fork with a flame issuing from the centre. The padlock was used in the Middle Ages to signify steadfastness in love. The significance of the decoration on the shoulders is not clear. The finger-ring is gold and dates from the fifteenth century. J P Robinson Curator of Medie…

An incomplete cast gold finger ring of medieval date. The finger ring consists of two hoops which gradually widen, extending into and joining at, twin oval bezels. One bezel has an inset garnet while the other is empty though would also have held a gem but not necessarily of the same type. To either side of the bezels, between the hoops, two knops of gold are present. Those to one side remain attached to both hoops while those at the other side are only joined to one hoop. From the external edge of one of the hoops two further knops are present which may suggest the original ring had…
