TREASURE CASE : 2021 T608 A probably complete gold mount probably of Early Bronze Age date, c.2150-1750 BC. The mount consists of a sub-rectangular thin gold sheet that has been folded at least three times, into at least four layers.  One outer layer consists of one terminal end of the mount.  This end is rounded and tapers slightly before widening again into the main body of the mount.  A fold, bending the mount completely back on itself, connects this layer to the outer layer on the opposite side of the folded mount.  This outer layer continues to widen before a…

Treasure Case : 2019 T327. Description: An incomplete, gold mount of Medieval date, c.AD 1100 - 1600. It comprises a curved frame, broken at both ends (perhaps originally annular), and a narrowed, plain extension at one edge. The frame is plain on its inner face, and bordered by a low flange before the exterior decoration. This decoration is a series of radiating, incised lines between globular pellets. The extension is sub-rectangular in shape, narrowed from the frame to its terminal and contains three circular perforations arranged around a globular pellet. A narrow, inci…

TREASURE CASE : 2004 T292 Late 9th- early 10th century Anglo-Saxon gold fragment. The fragment weighs 1.1g, measures 1.5mm in width and 7mm in height, and it is slightly bent at one corner (here the filigree border is lost). The shape of the fragment suggests that the original object was cut as a cruciform pattern from a circular plate in order to give a splayed out cross with empty rounded armpits (for a similar shape, see the Beeston Tor Cave brooch, deposited c. 875 in The Making of England, no. 245a). The cross-shape was decorated with gold rather coarse filigree, which also provi…

Date: 14th - 15th century A fragment of a medieval gold badge or mount, now damaged and incomplete. On one side, a standing robed figure cradling a baby probably represents the Virgin and Child. The reverse side is difficult to interpret, but may represent a vase decorated with a cross, with what may be foliage radiating from it. The edges of the badge are engraved with fluting, and may once have included stitching holes, for attaching to clothing or as a hat badge.

Treasure case : 2009 T124 Object Date: 7th century Description: Gold mount Curved gold panel inlaid with garnet cloisonné. A small, gently curving, sub-rectangular tray set inside a cable-twist gold border. Nine garnets on waffered gold foils are inserted into the tray. The back of the mount is plain except for two areas of damage, which are likely to represent previous attachment points. Discussion: It is unclear what kind of object the small mount might have come from. There are numerous possibilities, including large disc brooches (Avent 1975), buckles or sword fittings. Non-destr…
