Object type: PENDANT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Published
The ear ring is made of sheet gold and appears to have been originally cylindrical which tapers slightly to the upper edge. The ear ring or pendant is now crumpled and incomplete as the means of suspension is missing.
The outer face is decorated with a repeating motif of a high-relief pellet with a small triangle above, both within a high-relief droplet shaped border. The lower edge of the earring is decorated with a band of low-relief cross-hatching. The upper edge is particularly crumpled, but may be decorated with a single ridge.
The object is either an ear ring or pendant dat…

Object type: EAR RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Warwickshire
Workflow stage: Published
The ear ring is made of gold with a square setting, which is set within a decorated border. The setting is formed by a square cell which has a plain frame around the edge. The setting is probably dark green glass which is slightly abraded except for where it is chipped, and the surface is then shiny with conchoidal ripples.
The frame around the setting on the outer face appears to be integral to the surrounding border. On the reverse this square cell forms a high-relief platform from which a length of gold wire protrudes from the centre. The platform has a burr around the base of t…

Description: The bracelet is formed by two rectangular strips of gold which originally were possibly joined, but this is not certain. The breaks have been more recently been broken possibly through being bent in the first instance. The strips are flat in profile and decorated on one face. The decorated faces have a plain border with two parallel ridges within. These ridges have transverse notches which forms a fine ribbing.
Dimensions: Togetherthe strips are 46.22mm long, 6.19mm wide, 0.67mm thick and together they weigh 1.47g.
Discussion: The fragment is similar to 2004 T49…

Report on potential Treasure for HM Coroner
2014 T297 Elmley Lovett, Worcs.
Roman gold finger-ring of 'keeled' type. Narrow hoop of square-section, rather crudely shaped, that expands to flat triangular shoulders decorated with a pair of diverging grooves in the centre with a volute on each side. The flat ovoid bezel has a gold applique soldered to it, which enclosed a rubbed over bluish-grey intaglio, probably nicolo. The outer ring of the applique forms a collar, which is decorated with spaced punched hemispherical indents.
The intaglio is very worn and the device is rathe…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Warwickshire
Workflow stage: Published
A small Roman hexagonal gold finger-ring set with a red jasper intaglio. The hoop, now slightly squashed, has broad angular shoulders. The oval intaglio is set flush with the surface of the rectangular bezel. The intaglio is finely-engraved with a combination: a bearded Silenus head conjoined back-to-back to an inverted, clean-shaven, youthful head, probably Pan. The sinuous motif that separates/ unites the heads is probably an elephant's trunk with stylised palm branch, but it may also be 'read' as facial hair and a long hair lock for the Silenus. Spalling of the surface of the intag…

A Roman gold finger ring of a hollow-construction, with a nicolo imitation intaglio which is produced in layered light blue and dark blue glass. The hoop is oval and has a sub 'D'-shaped section, the apex of which is slightly angular. The hoop is widest at the bezel and tapers gradually towards the back. It is a finger ring of Henig's Type III (Henig, M. A Corpus of Roman Engraved Gemstones from the British Isles (B.A.R. 8) Oxford 1978).
The bezel has an oval setting. The intaglio is made from light blue and dark blue glass and closer examination of the upper surface reveals freq…
