An incomplete early medieval gold disc pendant with filigree decoration and a central boss, dating to the seventh century. Just under half of the pendant survives, comprising one side of a circular disc of sheet gold, with a rim edged with a strand of gold beaded wire. At the original centre of the disc is a cabochon boss of shell or white paste with a central, circular aperture, the original setting now missing and the aperture filled with earth. The boss is set within a plain gold collet made from an upright strip, bound with a border of beaded wire at its base. Four rect…

A complete medieval gold finger ring, AD.1200-1450. The ring consists of a simple gold band made from oval section gold wire, this joins a central bezel with a shoulder ridge upon either side. The band has been distorted post deposition but is otherwise complete. The bezel is set with a single teardrop shaped red stone, possibly a garnet. The setting stands above the band, flaring outwards slightly. It matches the stone in shape and so the setting is also teardrop shaped. Egan and Pritchard 1991, discuss a similar ring No.1610, which dates to the 14th century, though other examples ha…

A post-medieval gold posy ring. The ring is circular in plan and D-shaped in section. The exterior is plain and the interior is inscribed in italics 'When God saw fit this knot was knit'. Post-Medieval gold finger-ring. The inside of the hoop is undecorated. The outer edge is decorated with a circumferential groove at the top and bottom. Dimensions: Weight: 11.17 g Diameter: 20.95 mm Thickness: 1.92 mm Width of the band: 7.86 mm Discussion: The shape of this finger-ring is similar to 16th century decorated examples such as GLO-FDEB41 (Treasure reference: 2014 T248) and DOR-DDFC92 (Treasure reference: 2013 T817). A similar example in the British Museum's collection has an upper-case inscription and therefore can be dated to the 16th to 17th century AD (1961,…

Treasure case: 2009 T401, pre-Treasure Act case, not Treasure, returned to finder Description: Medieval, 13th century, gold finger-ring of stirrup shape with indented square setting on bezel surrounded by quartrelobed indented faceting, stone missing. Discussion: Similar rings, though with more pronounced stirrup bezels, have been found at West Lindsey, Lincolnshire (Treasure Annual Report 1998-1999, no. 110) and Norton, North Yorkshire (Treasure Annual Report 2000 no. 98). A silver-gilt example with slighter stirrup bezel to the previous examples and closer to this example was…

Treasure case 2009 T208 - returned to finder Gold fede ring with clasped hands holding a heart, rosettes flanking the ‘cuffs’. Inscribed ‘Noe recompense but love’. Maker’s mark MB in rectangle: the same mark is on British Museum finger-ring 1961,1202.254 but not identifiable in any standard reference works (see BM website under search the collection database/museum provenance and number search for images). The design of the ring suggests an 18th Century date rather than 17th Century date, and it is therefore unlikely to be more than 300 years old. Judy Rudoe Curator of…
