Description:A late medieval (15th century) gold posy finger ring with an inscription which reads, in black letter: x cest mon desir (this is my wish). The ring is slightly distorted, but complete. The three words are spaced equally around the band and sit within lentoid expansions of two narrow ribs which encircle the ring. Between the words the spaces between the ribs and the rim of the ring are infilled with a diagonal grid. The words themselves may originally have been displayed within fields of enamel, perhaps red. Traces of enamel appear to survive against the keyed bac…

A parcel of folded gold strips or ribbons of probable Bronze Age date. The parcel appears to comprise two separate strips of differing lengths. The shorter has been folded once and the longer has six folds. The shorter fragment has a rounded terminal with a raised edge and measures 8.91mm in width. There are no signs of additional decoration. Discussion: This may be a ribbon form bracelet or similar adornment which has been scrapped and folded for remelting. Dimensions: Length 9.6mmmm; width 8.91mm; weight 1.18g.

A complete Late Bronze Age gold-plated penannular ring with a near-circular cross section. Damage on one of the terminals shows that the ring has been plated but the nature of the core is unclear (although it is likely to be copper alloy on the ground of known comparanda). There is no sign of banding in differential shades of gold, this being a common form of decoration on similar rings. Dimensions: Diameter 13.9mm; thickness 4.2mm; weight 2.77g.

A fragment of an ingot of light brown/yellow gold. The fragment has a rounded rectangular section and bears many hammering facets, mainly on the slightly convex upper face. There are a number of facetted hollows, particularly on the lower, concave surface, perhaps from its being held in a vice. Both broken ends are left rough. Such objects are difficult to date. And wide date range of Iron Age to early medieval seems reasonable.

A length of gold ribbon, apparently complete. Both long sides taper gradually towards a rounded terminal which is now hooked over. The corners of the opposite end are both bent over and flattened. Multiple transverse ridges suggest that the ribbon has been folded multiply at some point in its life and then rolled flat again. No ornament is present. Dimensions: Length 44.84mm; width 11.12mm; weight 1.83g. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis undertaken by the Science department at the British Museum indicated a surface composition of approximately 89-92% gold, 7-10% silve…

A complete gold finger-ring of late Early-Medieval date. The ring is composed of two plain circular-sectioned rods twisted together with two finer beaded wires which are twisted in between, resulting in alternating plain and beaded bands. The rods taper in diameter towards their ends which are hammered together to form a flattened join. The join is expanded and bears a decoration of four annular stamps. This ring is of a late Viking type dating to the 10th and 11th centuries, and possibly into the early 12th century in Scandinavia. Similar rings recorded under the Treasure A…
