Medieval gold finger ring. The bezel consists of a lion couchant, moulded in high relief and soldered to the hoop. The beast's rump is faceted with multiple hammer marks. There are deeply moulded grooves on the mane and paws, and a deep groove for the mouth, but the top of the lion's head is worn smooth, with only traces surviving of grooves indicating the nose and eyes. A separate circular sectioned piece of wire extends from the lion's mouth to between its paws, curving back up towards the nose before a break. The hoop in front of the lion is plain before a transverse ridge and slig…

Gold finger-ring with circular collet, in the form of a quatrefoil, set with a turquoise cabochon. The narrow hoop of flattened D-section is decorated at the shoulders with foliar motifs and with inlaid dark blue enamel at the terminals. The collet can be compared with that of a ring from Newball, Lincolnshire, which was dated to the late 15th or early 16th century. (Treasure Annual Report 2003, 108, no. 194). It is also similar to a ring shown on the left hand of Thomas Cromwell in a portrait painted by Holbein in 1534-5 (Oman 1974, 96, plate 23 A). Late 15th - early 16th century. In…

A gold posy ring, D-shaped in section. Inscribed internally 'Loue i,s' the bond of peace' with a stamped, worn makers mark consisting of HB (ligatured) stamped in relief within a square. Tiny traces of possible niello survive in some of the letters. The marks on either side of the s may be unintentional as, although clear, they are slightly irregular. The lettering is similar to that on an example from Firle, East Sussex (Treasure Annual Report 2004, 296, fig. 315), dated 1696. External diameter 20mm, internal diameter 16.5mm. Gold finger-ring, complete but bent. The slender hoop (2mm wide) is triangular in section, and each of the upper faces is engraved with lettering between four square bosses; the least worn of these has engraved decoration of a quatrefoil with a central circle. It is possible that the lettering should be read along one face to the boss, then back along the other face, and so there are 5 words or phrases. Only those on the shoulders are clear enough to read; one seems to say +AV [boss] MIE and the other +AM [boss] IA. James Robinson has seen the ring and feels that the lettering was pro…

Roman openwork gold finger-ring, now flattened, but not otherwise damaged. The hoop consists of two square-sectioned wires giving a width of 6-7mm, joined with a series of tightly-coiled C-shaped volutes also in square wire. There are ten of these, facing inward at the bezel from the centre back. The bezel is backed with a rather rough square of gold sheet and is virtually circular; there are four small gold grains where the hoop wires are attached. The setting is about 7mm in diameter, and contains a cabochon-cut garnet with an almost flat surface. The ring appears to be late Roman, …
