Object type: WIRE
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A piece of gold wire made from four strands twisted. The wire was made from 4 smaller wires (diameter c. 2.4 mm) twisted together in a clockwise spiral giving an overall diameter for the twisted wire of 5 mm. The wire piece weighs 7.24g and is 20mm long (unstraightened). The fragment appears to have been cut from a larger piece of wire at one end, although the other end appears to be a break. Analysis shows these wires are made of over 80% gold.

Fragment of gold sheet from an unidentified object. The sheet is folded forming a front and back-plate the edges of which are torn, except for the lower edge of the back-plate which appears neatly cut, and the straight folded edge. The front-plate is decorated with a row of stamped dots above a row of repoussé pellets parallel with the folded edge, the lower edge possibly torn along a third row of pellets or dots. Surviving dimensions 12 x 7mm. Weight 0.4g. Although ancient (over 300 years old) the decoration would be consistent with a Bronze Age, Roman or Early Medieval date, and…

Circumstances: Found whilst digging trenches through a paddock for gas pipes. No further objects were recovered at the time of discovery, however, the finder states that in recent years the owners have had substantial amounts of topsoil added to level the site. Description: Complete gold Middle Bronze Age four flange twisted bar torc. The main bar has been cut longitudinally to create an X-shaped cross-section and has been twisted relatively evenly. The hoop has been slightly distorted and a number of the crests of the twist have been bent or otherwise damaged. At either end of the tw…

There are two empty holes punched through from one face at the short edge, and two punched through from the opposite face near the rounded point, one of which is through the long straight edge. Description: Ball-headed pin head made from gold with filigree wire and pellet decoration. The pin head is hollow and globular, with a circular hole at each end surrounded by an annulet of beaded wire; the upper and lower half are separated by a border of a line of beaded wire either side of what appears now to be a plain wire, but on closer inspection is actually a beaded wire worn down so that the beads have almost disappeared. This triple-strand border probably conceals a soldered join. Both halves are decorated alike, with two-ply twisted wire forming three pairs of opposed S- …

Circular sheet of gold with a projection to one side decorated with four longitudinal grooves. Opposite the projection the sheet appears to have punchmarks or crimping around part of the circumference. There are quite a few accidental indentations which have all been made from the undecorated face, leaving bumps on the decorated face. I suspect that this object may be the back plate from a cabochon pendant, perhaps at an early stage of manufacture or perhaps never made well and later damaged. If I am right, the 'crimping' around the circumference would be to hold a beaded wire bord…
