Gold mourning ring dated 23 September 1805. The ring has a wide hoop, of even width throughout but now crumpled in one place. It is decorated on the exterior with a beaded ridge to top and bottom, two plain ridges within this, and a central band of relief lettering reading ELIZ: SHERMAN. DIED. 23. SEP: 1805. AGED. 81 The stops vary, sometimes colons but mostly central pellets. There is a space-filling motif, probably a rosette or flower, between the start and end of the inscription. Although the lettering is very neat, the workmanship is untidy, with lots of engraving scrat…

Description: Heavy but small gold finger-ring set with an intaglio engraved with a horse facing right (left in impression). The ring is of Guiraud's type 2c and Henig's type II. The hoop is biconvex in cross-section, flaring from a minimum of 2.6mm wide and 2.2mm thick at the point furthest from the bezel into smooth, undecorated shoulders which in turn swell into the oval bezel. The oval intaglio is pale brown in colour. It is raised from the surface of the bezel and its sides are sloped and rounded, exploiting the layered nature of the stone so that the horse is cut ag…

It flares upwards and flattens in thickness to a tall stirrup-shaped bezel which is just 0.9mm thick. This has a rounded cut-out at the top which wraps around the gemstone at little to form a pair of claws. At right angles to these are two more claws which are apparently integrally cast with the rest of the hoop. Description: Gold post-medieval posy ring. Plain 3.8mm wide D-shaped cross-section band. Internal inscription in Roman capitalised text reads; + LOVE * AND * FEARE * GOD *. The posy has a cross potent initial mark and the individual letters are separated by six-pointed stars. No maker's mark. Dimensions: Diameter 22.0 mm, Weight 3.9g. Discussion: As the ring is plain and has no maker's mark the dating evidence is largely restricted to the posy and its form. The inscription is in capitalised Roman script and there is good evidence for this style on posy rings in the early pos…

Description: Incomplete medieval to post-medieval gold finger ring. The bezel is oval, mimicking the shape of the stone. The upper half forms a collet with concave sides, open at the top to house an oval gem, constructed in a so called 'pie-dish' style - popular in the thirteenth century. The mouth is now bent out of shape in places. The lower face is divided from the upper by a circumferential ridge, the edges crimped (a feature characteristic of rings from the later 14th century) and has tapering sides and a flat bottom. The setting is a dark pink-red cabochon gem, possi…

Description: Post-medieval gold finger ring. The band is now slightly distorted and exhibits a transverse crack. The exterior is decorated with applied gold filigree and granulation consisting of a series of lozenges formed by filigree wire; within each lozenge is a cross formed of 7 or 8 pellets arranged in a transverse line with a pellet above and below at the centre point. One lozenge appears slightly truncated and has only 6 pellets. Some of the pellets are missing or appear to be positioned slightly off-centre. At the meeting point between each lozenge are two pellets, each with …

Narrow circular loop with plain flat inner surface, the flat outer surface engraved with a pseudo-inscription containing a combination of lettering travelling in a combination of conventional and retrograde, the S lying on its side, presumably to fit the width of the hoop. Description: Gold late medieval to early post-medieval finger-ring. It has a rectangular bezel with a raised collet containing a clear grey glass or gem setting, possibly rock crystal. The gem is table-cut and has lost three large chips along one side. The walls of the collet are bent around the gem to hold it in place. They rise from a slightly wider collar decorated with a longitudinal groove. Below this is a larger groove, and then below is the wider base of the bezel which is decorated with a series of transverse (vertical) grooves running around the edge to give a ribbed effect. …
