Fragment of thin gold sheet or foil, from an object of indeterminate use and date. The artefact comprises a flat, roughly D-shaped sheet, with a single neat straight edge. A crease follows the line of the straight edge about 2-3mm from it, forming a slight  groove or ridge along the edge. The rest of the object has hammer marks, probably from being beaten into its flat sheet form. Description: Incomplete, gold artefact of possible Bronze Age date. It comprises a trapezoidal fragment, lenticular in cross-section, with cut marks on all edges. Both surfaces exhibit traces of hammering facets, indicating that it was hammered flat from a thicker wire or bar. Undated but ancient octagonal-sectioned gold bar, very slightly expanded at the complete blunt end, irregular at the other end as if cut several times and then broken, the break partially granular and unworn. Surviving length 20mm. Maximum diameter at the complete end 7mm. Weight 8.9g. Perhaps Bronze Age. See NMS-CE16B3 for similar undated gold fragments which were found at a nearby site. Description: The find consists of a tiny, irregular, flat fragment of molten gold; width, 6mm; weight 0.3 grams. The fragment is undiagnostic and undatable, so does not qualify as Treasure under the stipulated criteria of the Treasure Act. We recommend that the Secretary of State should disclaim the Crown's interest in this find and should be grateful if the Coroner would authorise its return.
