Object type: PENANNULAR RING
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published
Description: Penannular ring of probable Bronze Age date, probably from a composite (multiple strand) ring. It is C-shaped in cross-section, with a convex outer and a concave interior. The width of the ring is very consistent but the two ends do not sit quite in line, as if the ring has been slightly bent out of shape. There is a c. 1.5mm gap between the two ends, one of which is slightly incurved and the other slightly outcurved, as if they once joined. The top and bottom edges are neat and parallel, but one is more highly polished than the other, which has a narrow roughened str…

Two quarter nobles found very close together. One is of Edward III, the other of Henry V. They surely represent part of a hoard or purse loss. Some wear as well as scuffing is evident and we might suppose a date of loss or depostion at some point in the mid-15th century.
Catalogue
Edward III, quarter noble, Treaty Series, North 1243, weight 1.44g (clipped), 1363-9

Description: Incomplete early Anglo-Saxon gold mount or stud. It is circular, with a flat backplate c. 21mm in diameter, and an upright strip forming a low wall which curves in slightly to form a partial dome. Around the edge of the object, the junction between wall and backplate is masked by a rope-like filigree band consisting of (probably) three beaded wires twisted together, heavily worn on the outside. Above this is a single similar but unworn beaded wire.
Just above the single beaded wire are four equally spaced gold rivets with small neat rounded heads, 2.0-2.2mm in diamet…

Description: Gold pendant, of roughly circular shape, made from small pieces of gold sheet soldered together. The centre is formed of a square foil collet set set upon a base of spiral-coiled gold wire and set with a stone, probably a rock crystal. Around this were originally four similar rectangular collets set with what are probably garnets, forming a cross shape. One collet is missing entirely, another is missing its setting, but two adjacent collets survive complete.
In the angles of these collets are elaborate fleurs-de-lis manufactured from strips of sheet gold set on edge,…

Description: Sturdy and neatly made medieval gold finger-ring with a transversely set blue gem. The hoop is undecorated and sub-circular in cross-section. It measures 2.2 x 2.0mm at its narrowest and 2.5mm in diameter at the widest point; it then flares smoothly to the junction with the bezel, where the cross-section measures 3.0 x 3.2mm on each side. The interior of the hoop is not smooth and flat but is instead quite strongly curved.
Each end of the hoop, at its junction with the bezel, has a thin flat shield-shaped plate across it, with a straight top and sides curving to a po…

Description: Small gold post-medieval finger ring with internal posy (also poesy or posie) inscription. The ring is badly distorted, bent across a single axis, making it difficult to determine the exact diameter and the full detail of the posy. The cross-section is D-shaped in the best-preserved areas but more C-shaped elsewhere, suggesting crushing.
The posy is difficult to decipher, the beginning being obscured by an abrupt crease in the hoop. The first few letters appear to have been lightly engraved, with the end of the inscription carrying more weight. The letter form of the…

Description: Two aurei of Augustus found in the same area as six other coins recovered previously (2017T827, NMS-297275) and representing an addendum to that group. Each carries a peck mark on the obverse, similar to the peck marks noted on the other coins. The pecking would have been carried out to check that the coins were of gold and not plated forgeries.
Date: The lack of any coins of Tiberius implies that this hoard was assembled in the early 1st century AD, probably in the first two decades of the century, in the late Iron Age, and well before the Roman Invasion of AD43. Late Ir…
