Description
Orthodox-cross-shaped early Medieval gold pendant. The pendant has an upper suspension loop fashioned from a four ribbed strip, formed into a circle and soldered across the top of a three-layered cross made from twisted wire. At the terminal end of each arm of the cross the middle layer of twisted wire is worked into an open trefoil arrangement. On each face of the cross a small spherical pellet of gold is affixed to the central interstice of each trefoil foil. One foil of the trefoil, at the end of the longest arm of the cross, is missing. Fragment (about a quarter) of a gold 'Brancaster-type' finger ring with a wide hoop, flat on the reverse and very slightly convex on the outer face. The hoop expands very slightly before the raised rectangular bezel, which is engraved with a bird standing on the ground, holding a leafy branch in its beak, with its head turned to face its tail. The band is broken to either side of the bezel. A small part of one break has been polished by the finder to test the quality of the metal.
