Gold puzzle ring in the form of two linked rings, now distorted, of square section, each with a twist at one point where there are also signs of wear. This is almost certainly a puzzle ring, usually formed of multiple hoops, secured with a central twist, often forming the bezel. A puzzle ring with only two hoops is unusual, but given the damage is is possible that the ring is not complete. Original internal diameter of each ring c. 20mm. Section 1 x 1mm. Uninscribed gold quarter stater of Gallo-Belgic Continental type. The obverse is interpreted as a crescent-shaped boat with two standing occupants. This obverse form is generally associated with Gallo-Belgic tribes; see Rudd; Ancient British Coins (2010); p29; ABC 40. Circa 80-60 BC. A common reverse for the boat type quarter staters is a tree, however the reverse of this example consists of converging chisel marks with a globular body above, and fine lines radiating to the edge of the coin (very difficult to interpret as a tree). No parallel can be found for this in the (ibid) ABC re…

A medieval finger-ring set with a sapphire. It has suffered considerable damage, the hoop now distended. The form is a decorated stirrup shape, with two four-petaled flowers forming the shoulders and two others symmetrically decorating the hoop. The damage to the ring has removed much of the inscription, which would have covered the external face of the hoop. The traces of some letters can be discerned. They read as follows: ......V... R(?)DEFIN The "N" is reversed. The original meaning of the inscription cannot be established.
