Gold pierced imitation coin of early-medieval date, probably early 9th century; probably intended as a pendant. Description: A gold disc, struck with a design on both faces. Each face has a beaded border, originally very neatly placed around the edge, but in places now worn to a plain ridge. Within this is an imitation inscription mainly consisting of radial raised strokes, virtually all of which have raised dots at either end.  The centre of the design consists essentially of three horizontal rows of short vertical strokes on the obverse, and five …

Description: Gold pendant set with cabochon-cut gem, probably a garnet. The gem is smoothly polished, but is now cracked across its lower right-hand edge. It is placed on a gold backplate and surrounded with a gold strip collar, slightly curved transversely to fit around the stone; this is now cracked in places. The join between backplate and collar is covered with two layers of beaded gold wire filigree, now very worn, especially to either side of the suspension loop. The suspension loop is formed out of a projection integral to the backplate, which is now broken just above the body …

Description: Incomplete gold pendant of 7th-century date. Probably originally mushroom-shaped or pelta-shaped, about two-thirds now survives; the missing third includes the suspension loop. It consists of a thin flat backplate with beaded wires soldered to it. The original edge has a very worn beaded wire, and the centre point is marked by a loose anti-clockwise spiral beaded wire. This is flanked by a pair of lines making an inverted V shape; each line is made up of a thicker central beaded wire leading from the border wire andsurrounded by a long U of thinner beaded wi…

Description: Gold pendant, of roughly circular shape, made from small pieces of gold sheet soldered together. The centre is formed of a square foil collet set set upon a base of spiral-coiled gold wire and set with a stone, probably a rock crystal. Around this were originally four similar rectangular collets set with what are probably garnets, forming a cross shape. One collet is missing entirely, another is missing its setting, but two adjacent collets survive complete. In the angles of these collets are elaborate fleurs-de-lis manufactured from strips of sheet gold set on edge,…

Description Orthodox-cross-shaped early Medieval gold pendant. The pendant has an upper suspension loop fashioned from a four ribbed strip, formed into a circle and soldered across the top of a three-layered cross made from twisted wire. At the terminal end of each arm of the cross the middle layer of twisted wire is worked into an open trefoil arrangement. On each face of the cross a small spherical pellet of gold is affixed to the central interstice of each trefoil foil. One foil of the trefoil, at the end of the longest arm of the cross, is missing. On the rear face, at the in…

Description: An incomplete early medieval gold and garnet cross pendant, comprising three of the original four arms and the suspension loop. The cross is of equal-armed form, the upper and lower arms (as pictured) being part of the same sheet plate but the right arm bring soldered to a side projection which terminates in a worn tear. A similar projection on the opposite side indicates that the missing arm was attached in a similar manner. It is unclear whether all four arms were originally cut from one sheet and later repaired, or the construction method may be deliberate. At the…

Description: A complete gold bulla pendant dating to the early medieval period. The pendant is made from two domed discs of gold sheet joined by an integral rectangular strip. The strip is folded in the centre so that the domed discs sit back-to-back, creating an orb-like shape with a narrow outer flange. Both domes are slightly crushed out of shape and the flanges are now not secured to each other but sit slightly apart. The integral strip forms the suspension loop. Medieval gold pendent cross with a ribbed suspension loop and with similar decoration on both faces. Each arm consists of four twisted rods and ends in a trefoil and at the crossing there is a pellet in each angle. Discussion: Barry Ager has noted that the object "belongs to a type associated with Greek Orthodoxy in the Eastern Baltic region and is connected with the spread of Christianity there in the Middle Ages. A very similar example, also with a ribbed loop, twisted rod arms, four pellets at the crossing and trefoil terminals is illustrated in Austin and Alcock (eds.) 1990, …

Description: Early Anglo-Saxon gold disc pendant made from a relatively thick back-plate onto which are soldered all the other components. In the centre is a collar formed from a vertical strip of sheet gold, retaining a shiny translucent orange/brown cabochon containing air bubbles, identified by Raman spectroscopy (see below) as glass. The collar is now cracked and has a lumpy appearance, possibly some gold solder acting as a repair. Late Bronze Age gold pendant: one end of a slightly bent round-sectioned shank has been hammered into a D-sectioned loop, while the other expands into a conical terminal on which another object may have swivelled. Formerly described as probably Roman, it has been reassigned, by Caroline Barton and Ben Roberts of the British Museum, to the Late Bronze Age on the basis of its similarity to a copper alloy example in the Boughton Malherbe (Kent) hoard (PAS KENT-15A293). Length 34mm. Width of loop 5.5mm. Diameter of shank 2 - 1.5mm. Diameter of terminal 3mm. Weight 1.89g. 9th century BC.

Gold pendant. Sub-triangular, hollow, originally rectangular sectioned but now concave on both faces. The front and back plate and double ribbed suspension loop are formed from the same piece of metal sheet folded over, with a separate double ribbed repoussé sheet forming the sides, the ends of which join under the loop. Filigree decoration in the form of six closely spaced 'S' shaped scrolls not arranged symmetrically, and a length of wire following the edge of the pendant with inward curled ends near the top, is fused to the surface. A tremissis or pseudo-tremissis of the 7th century, which has been pierced and gilded for use as a pendant. The tremissis is a coin type widely issued by the Merovingian Franks in this period, but also produced by the Anglo-Saxons and Frisians. Such coins were produced in fairly good gold at the beginning of the century, but with the gold contained declining as the century progressed, with the gold increasingly replaced by silver. The design on this example is relatively crude, and could represent either a Merovingian coin or an imitation produced elsewhere. Its gold content is c. 41-4…

A gold solidus of the emperor Theodosius I struck at Milan between 378 and 387 (Roman Imperial Coinage vol. IX, no. 5f or 8b). The coin has been fitted with a ribbed suspension loop, also of gold, at the 12 o'clock position on the obverse (6 o'clock on the reverse) in order for it to serve as a pendant. This process is well known from the early Saxon period when many Roman gold coins were thus treated. Coin dated to 378-87, suspension loop added from the fifth to early seventh century. Obv. Circular sheet of gold with a projection to one side decorated with four longitudinal grooves. Opposite the projection the sheet appears to have punchmarks or crimping around part of the circumference. There are quite a few accidental indentations which have all been made from the undecorated face, leaving bumps on the decorated face. I suspect that this object may be the back plate from a cabochon pendant, perhaps at an early stage of manufacture or perhaps never made well and later damaged. If I am right, the 'crimping' around the circumference would be to hold a beaded wire border …
