Gold posy ring, inscribed 'remember mee'. There are traces of black enamel left in the inscription. It is a very charming piece being so small in size, but as it is otherwise plain and bears no assay marks, it is very difficult to date with any accuracy. There is certainly no evidence to date it pre-1700, and it is most likely to be 18th century. It does not therefore fall within the Treasure remit.

Circular sheet of gold with a projection to one side decorated with four longitudinal grooves. Opposite the projection the sheet appears to have punchmarks or crimping around part of the circumference. There are quite a few accidental indentations which have all been made from the undecorated face, leaving bumps on the decorated face. I suspect that this object may be the back plate from a cabochon pendant, perhaps at an early stage of manufacture or perhaps never made well and later damaged. If I am right, the 'crimping' around the circumference would be to hold a beaded wire border …

Neither terminal looks broken - thus object is complete. Ribbon is extremely tangled, but it would seem that intermediate narrowing is roughly central. The 'bar' thus created is currently tightly curved but may not have originally been so. Terminal 2 has flat section leading straight out of ribbon; no.1 is more rectangular and involves a half twist, its faces having sprung from the sides of the ribbon! No real sign of original twisting of ribbon - despite the extensive buckling there seems to be no 'extra-length' along the edges relative to the centre-line. Probably a bracelet, given …

Gold finger-ring, complete but bent. The slender hoop (2mm wide) is triangular in section, and each of the upper faces is engraved with lettering between four square bosses; the least worn of these has engraved decoration of a quatrefoil with a central circle. It is possible that the lettering should be read along one face to the boss, then back along the other face, and so there are 5 words or phrases. Only those on the shoulders are clear enough to read; one seems to say +AV [boss] MIE and the other +AM [boss] IA. James Robinson has seen the ring and feels that the lettering was pro…

Roman openwork gold finger-ring, now flattened, but not otherwise damaged. The hoop consists of two square-sectioned wires giving a width of 6-7mm, joined with a series of tightly-coiled C-shaped volutes also in square wire. There are ten of these, facing inward at the bezel from the centre back. The bezel is backed with a rather rough square of gold sheet and is virtually circular; there are four small gold grains where the hoop wires are attached. The setting is about 7mm in diameter, and contains a cabochon-cut garnet with an almost flat surface. The ring appears to be late Roman, …

Gold and sapphire medieval finger-ring. Oval bezel, flat at back, with milled border. Central raised sub-oval collet with pale to mid blue stone still in place (termed 'sapphire' in the Treasure Annual Report, so perhaps analysed at the British Museum). Bezel of a noticeably redder gold than hoop. Plain slender flat-section hoop which appears to be soldered to the bezel at the shoulders. Height 23mm max. Width 18mm max. Probably 13th century.

A 6th century gold bracteate, found whilst searching with a metal-detector as part of an archaeological investigation. The bracteate is made of gold. The central design is carried out in well-executed pressblech technique, and is of an animal in Style I, a basic ribbon-shaped animal with the eye close to the loop, but with limbs nearly unidentifiable, around a central 'dimple' (seen on some other bracteates). The central design is enclosed within three concentric rings of punched decoration. The outer ring is on the edge of the disc and gives the impression of a bead rim. These i…
