Early Saxon gold composite spangles or pendant: a square sheet plate is set lozenge-wise and pierced for suspension at one corner, the top of the perforation is almost worn through. Wire rings with wound ends hang from the other three corners, each holding a smaller square sheet plate pierced for suspension in one corner. There is a repoussé boss in the centre of all four plates. A gold posy ring, D-shaped in section. Inscribed internally 'Loue i,s' the bond of peace' with a stamped, worn makers mark consisting of HB (ligatured) stamped in relief within a square. Tiny traces of possible niello survive in some of the letters. The marks on either side of the s may be unintentional as, although clear, they are slightly irregular. The lettering is similar to that on an example from Firle, East Sussex (Treasure Annual Report 2004, 296, fig. 315), dated 1696. External diameter 20mm, internal diameter 16.5mm. A gold solidus of the emperor Theodosius I struck at Milan between 378 and 387 (Roman Imperial Coinage vol. IX, no. 5f or 8b). The coin has been fitted with a ribbed suspension loop, also of gold, at the 12 o'clock position on the obverse (6 o'clock on the reverse) in order for it to serve as a pendant. Gold finger-ring with circular collet, in the form of a quatrefoil, set with a turquoise cabochon. The narrow hoop of flattened D-section is decorated at the shoulders with foliar motifs and with inlaid dark blue enamel at the terminals. The collet can be compared with that of a ring from Newball, Lincolnshire, which was dated to the late 15th or early 16th century. (Treasure Annual Report 2003, 108, no. 194). A tremissis or pseudo-tremissis of the 7th century, which has been pierced and gilded for use as a pendant. The tremissis is a coin type widely issued by the Merovingian Franks in this period, but also produced by the Anglo-Saxons and Frisians. Such coins were produced in fairly good gold at the beginning of the century, but with the gold contained declining as the century progressed, with the gold increasingly replaced by silver. Gold finger ring: 'D' sectioned band. Internal black letter inscription reading 'nul auter' (Norman French, 'none other'). Decorated externally with three long chevrons each with a beaded border and a central five petalled flower and foliate decoration within. The sections separating the chevrons each have a median arris with an engraved plant on either side showing roots, stem with leaf to either side and pointed flower head. Gold pendant. Sub-triangular, hollow, originally rectangular sectioned but now concave on both faces. The front and back plate and double ribbed suspension loop are formed from the same piece of metal sheet folded over, with a separate double ribbed repoussé sheet forming the sides, the ends of which join under the loop. Filigree decoration in the form of six closely spaced 'S' shaped scrolls not arranged symmetrically, and a length of wire following the edge of the pendant with inward curled ends near the top, is fused to the surface. Description: The find consists of a tiny, irregular, flat fragment of molten gold; width, 6mm; weight 0.3 grams. The fragment is undiagnostic and undatable, so does not qualify as Treasure under the stipulated criteria of the Treasure Act. We recommend that the Secretary of State should disclaim the Crown's interest in this find and should be grateful if the Coroner would authorise its return.

Circumstances: Found while searching with a metal detector. Found at some time between 1992 and 2005. The object was not previously reported and was found in the finder's "junk" drawer during 2007. A gold finger ring, now distorted. A mourning ring with a shallow D-sectioned band, decorated with a simple stylised skull with teeth, eye sockets and nasal cavity, but missing the mandible. Two tiny particles of black may be all that remains of black enamel, but thet are too small to be certain. Inscribed internally RH oB 17 ° oct 87 (RH died 17th October 1687). Gold finger ring. Formed from two bands of twisted wire, one slightly wider than the other, and then hammered almost flat on the outside edge and two sides. The internal face retains the rounded shape of the wires and is only slightly worn. Probably post-medieval although no close parallels have been found, may date as recently as 20th Century. External diameter 20mm. Internal diameter 17mm. Width of band 2mm. Weight 1.16g.
