Gold finger ring. A straight-sided strip of sheet metal with a reddish tinge, expanded at a plain bezel whose edges are defined by a double line of rouletted dots, eccentrically angled. A magnified view also reveals traces of a borderline of meandering curls, possibly formed in the same way. A pair of lines of similar dots are carried along either shoulder of the ring, where they flank a series of trefoil or leaf-like stamps; no more than six to each side. The part of the band opposite the bezel is probably lost, unless the object was originally penannular. Bent. Suggested date: Post-…

Gold bracteate fragment. A fragment torn from the edge of a pendant disc exceeding 20mm in its diameter, and of thickness 0.7mm, now crumpled and folded. A cabled border, a closely juxtaposed circle of tiny overlapping wedges, and an elongated looping tendril are visible from one side. The other side displays similar detail, perhaps reversed as a stamped impression, together with multiple straight and curved lines which presumably contributed to a more coherent design, now obscured. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 500-600 Given its age and material this object is to be submitted …

Gold coin. Uninscribed Lindsey Scyphate quarter stater, ABC no. 1770, Later Iron Age issue of Haselgrove Period 2 Phase 6, 50-20 BC. Considered as 'rare' by Rudd et al. 2010. Obverse description: Stylised boar left, with a double line of pellets for its bristling back, a pair of curved ladders for its body, and with a pellet-ended X below its body. Further pellets, similar to those considered as bristles, recur below the X. Rose gold coin fragment. Probably an uninscribed South Ferriby gold stater of the Corieltauvi, ABC 1743, Haselgrove Period 2 Phase 6 issue of 50-20 BC; Rudd et al. consider the versions with a blank obverse to be 'Rare'. At least two thirds of flan are lost to a probably recent break, suggesting the complete coin to have weighed around 6gms. Obverse description: Blank Reverse description: Discombobulated Celticised lunate horse left, a rod with crescent end flanked by a pair of pellets above the horse; tiny curls next to the pellets. Gold coin. Uninscribed stater of the Corieltauvi, North East Coast V-Type, ABC 1728, Late Iron Age issue of 50-20 BC, Haselgrove Period 2 Phase 6. This coin is described as 'excessively rare' by Rudd et al., though also resembling the related ABC 1731 (which is 'very rare') in some details. Obverse description: Three indented V-shaped figures to top left, central Apollo wreath with rod with two small crescents and larger peltae at its end, another pelta adjacent; a small domino with a tiny humanoid figure overlooking it at left of flan. Gold annular brooch. Cast D-section band with a constriction for a cast tapered pin which is looped around the band. The convex display face bears a finely defined chevron motif, with V-shaped figures with internally indented edges confining strands of closely juxtaposed pellets, possibly in overlapping doubled rows. These were presumably stamped to achieve the fine definition observed here. The chevrons nest one within the next in a series originating and ending at the pin seat. The plain back appears lightly bevelled towards the central aperture. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1350 …

Gold bracelet fragment. Cast pentagonal-section strip, broken at one end and flattened to spatulate form at the other. The section is angular, with two low and probably worn facets on what is taken to have been the display or outer face, producing a gently keeled appearance. This is carried along the object to the spatulate end, which may therefore be regarded as a deliberately fashioned terminal to a penannular and probably symmetrical form, with its equivalent now lost. The object is now curved with two sharper and one more gentle bends, with two cracks near the latter. The finder k…

Early-medieval A-bracteate. A disc of beaten gold bearing a low-relief design within a stamped border, and retaining a finely billeted rim, now detached at 3 o'clock and broken at 12 o'clock relative to the design. The object also bears a ragged transverse tear extending from 10 o'clock. The central design is obviously derived from the profile diademed imperial bust appearing on late Roman coinage, though with significant adaptations which are deliberately chosen, rather than simple misconstructions of the design. A first departure from the Roman model is th…

Gold annular brooch. A tiny but superbly finished annular brooch with a band of plano-convex section. The convex display side has a deeply incised and closely spaced chevron pattern around the entire band, conferring a vermiform effect. The chevrons are interrupted only by a constricted seat for a collared cast gold pin. The reverse of the band bears stamped letters, each set in an indented rectangular panel, and each formerly inlaid with a dark and contrasting material, perhaps niello. Gold finger ring. A thin cast band of rectangular section bearing an externally incised inscription. This reads: + E D O + O N : T F + T R A N + A I F A, with heavily seriffed cross potent punctuation and unbarred A's, some with a vertical stroke in the place of the bar. The style of lettering broadly resembles that of the Short Cross coinage of 1180-1247, and probably points to a date in the first half of the 13th century. This reporter cannot venture upon the interpretation of the legend, though at this date it is likely to be Latinate. Malcolm Jones kindly comments on the reading a…

Gold finger ring. Posy ring. A cast D-section band, plain externally, but with an internal inscription rendered in angular capitals. The inscription reads: xASxYOVxWILx // with saltires separating words and with two superfluous slashes; the last word has doubled lines forming the I and L and serifs are prominent throughout. The phonetically correct English may point to a 17th-century date. Slightly battered. If the proposed dating were to be sustained, the item would constitute Treasure.
