Record ID: NARC-C99D15
Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
This small ring is formed of a simple plaited band. It is likely to be post-medieval in date, but in the absence of any parallels in the British Museum, there is no evidence to confirm that it is more than 300 years old. Consequently, as the ring cannot be securely dated to pre-1706 it falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

Fragment of gold bar. Probable Viking hack gold. A gold bar, 9mm thick, 12mm long and 4.5mm wide has been broken from a larger object or bar at both ends. There is no decoration or stamping visible. Gareth Williams has stated that: "(The Vikings had) what is known as a bullion economy, in which the weight and the purity of the precious metal are what is important, not what form the metal takes. Far and away the most common metal in the economy was silver, although gold was also used".

A gold finger ring of the type known as puzzle rings. Three inter-linking gold hoops square in section and 1.5mm wide. The hoops are mis-shapen and twisted, but were approximately 20mm in diameter when in its original shape. Similar has been recorded in the Treasure Annual Report 2005/6, (2005 T518), figure 880, page 171, and reported on by Judy Rudoe. In this report, Rudoe states that: "Although examples are known , puzzle rings are not common before 1700", and there is no contextual or stylistic evidence to date this ring to before 1711. This finger ring has therefore not been r…

CAROLVS D G MAG BR FR ET HI' REX Reverse: oval sheild between crowned C and R CVLTORES SVI DEVS PROTEGIT The left hand side of both the obverse and reverse appear very worn. However, the legends are very sharp and in mint condition. The wear is therefore a result of a worn die rather than coin use.

A very worn and damaged medieval gold quarter noble of Edward III. Most of the coin is illegible, but the letter E at the beginning of the obverse legend allows the ruler to be identified as Edward III. As it is so damaged, it has not been possible to date the coin more closely than to the broad dates of Edward's reign, from 1327 to 1377.
