An incomplete gold and gemstone pendant, ovoid in plan. The pendant comprises a dark, flat-topped gem, possibly a garnet, set within a gold frame. The frame is composite, made from a sheet gold back-plate to which has been attached an upright gold strip. The junction with the back-plate is covered by a two-tier filigree collar, the upper tier being a single strand of beaded wire and the outer tier (forming the edge of the pendant) comprising a second beaded strand of wire which has smaller, more tightly grouped, beads than the lower wire. A gold chain and pendant of Roman date. The chain is of a single figure-of-eight looped form (as Johns 1996, 195-6). The gold wire is circular in section and the length of chain is composed of 27 looped wire links. The lower loop of each link is set at 90 degrees to that above and below it. The upper end of the chain terminates in a penannular wire loop with a short section of wire twisted 6 times around its upper end. Description: Bulla pendant made from a single piece of gold. Both faces are circular and slightly domed, with narrow flat flanges around the edges which are tightly pressed, perhaps soldered, together. They are linked by a strip 3.1mm wide which was bent round to form a suspension loop; this loop is identically decorated on both faces. It is clear that the decoration of the loop was done before cutting out the metal, as in the centre (at the top) there are four ridges and three grooves, but towards the base of the loop, as the metal flares slightly, there are six or even seven grooves…
