A modern gold plated wire ring
Description: This object is a ring of approximately finger-ring size. It is constructed from coiled lengths of very fine, twisted wire. Five strands have been loosely coiled around themselves and curved into a ring. The overall appearance is quite loose and untidy. Each strand is composed of four very fine wires. Two pairs of these wires were twisted together, and the two twisted pairs then themselves twisted around each other.
Dimensions: Diameter: 18mm (approx.); Thickness of pair of twisted wires: 0.07mm (approx.); Weight: 0.44g

Broad period: MODERN
County: Medway
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
One of a pair of gold coins of uncertain date. The coins are gold and appear to have been cast. They are mostly identical, possibly having come from a mould. One side of the coins depicts a semi circular band with nine curvilinear lines radiating from it. The other side depicts an unclear zooamorphic figure. It has not been possible find a parallel for the coins and there has been a suggestion that they could be forgeries, though whether contemporary ones it is not possible to say. Another suggestion has been that they are of modern Indian origin.

A narrow gold band (4mm thick) with slightly convex sides, inscribed inside in seriffed lowercase letters: 'I wis to finde a constant minde', followed by the maker's mark (crowned DC) and the letters WPM (P above W & M). The edges are sharp suggesting that this ring has hardly been worn. The size of the ring is 20mm (internal diameter).
Discussion: The seriffed letter text is found on rings from 16th Century through to 18th Century. The maker's mark on this ring can be paralleled to an example in the British Museum collections 1961,1202.339, dated to 18th Century.

Date: possibly 19th Century
Description:
Gold ring (?) in the form of a flat strip expanding slightly towards one side which has a square raised rim on three sides, possibly the remains of a setting for a stone. However, the shape of the hoop is unusual; it does not conform to the standard shapes for the post-medieval rings of the 16th-18th century and may therefore be later.
Discussion: In the absence of any firm dating evidence it is not possible to confirm that this ring is more than 300 years old.

A parallel-sided thin gold band with plain back broken at both ends. The decorated face comprises three milled ribs flanked by plain raised rims. Neither the function of nor any close parallel for the object has been identified. The cast-in decoration implies a recent date which is neither confirmed nor rejected by the metal composition.

Dimensions: Length 26.5 mm. Width 7.6 mm. Thickness 0.4 mm.
Weight: 1.1 g.
Non-destructive surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated a gold content of 69-72% and a silver c…

A piece of gold, much bent and distorted. Beneath the folds can be seen the arms of England (first quarter) and those of Ireland (third quarter). This heraldic evidence points to a date of manufacture after the Act of Union in 1707.

Finger-ring. This heavy ring of signet ring type appears to be cast and may be gilt-metal rather than gold. It has foliate ornament on the shoulders which expand towards the oval bezel, which has diagonal foliate motifs. It is unlikely to be earlier than the late 19th century and may be more recent.
