A fragment of gold of uncertain date or function. Possibly hack gold. Sub-rectangular plan with rounded corners. Wedge-shaped profile, with a thicker edge which thins towards the opposite edge. Both surfaces are undecorated, but each has elongated impressed lines. On one surface are three horizontal lines which begin at the mid-point of the fragment, which corresponds with a slight convex raise in the profile. Perpendicular to this are a series of finer scratches. On the other side the profile is slightly convex. Horizontal to this are a series of similar elongated incised lines which …

A fragment of gold unidentified object of uncertain date. The object is U-shaped in form with a jagged break across the horizontal edge. The two adjoining sides are slightly rounded while the edge opposite to the break is flattened, as are both faces. The rounded edges both show signs of stress/ cracking. The object is similar in form and shape to HAMP-074BBA / 2019 T404, also of uncertain date and function but thought to possibly be an early-medieval coin blank due to notches ('test marks') on the edge. There are no obvious notches on this pieces, except for the stress marks on the r…

A probably incomplete and bent pointed-oval shaped piece of sheet gold 0.4mm thick, of possible Bronze Age date (2,500-800 BC). The long edges are both jagged and circa one third is folded transversely back on/ under itself. The terminal at the shorter end appears complete. It narrows to a point which is again folded back on itself, perhaps incidentally or perhaps intentionally - it could be interpreted as a hook. The terminal at the opposite end also narrows to a point and is intentionally cut in a straight diagonal on one edge. This terminal is also folded back on itself. As the obj…

An unidentified sheet-gold bag-shaped object, with one closed, rounded end and a narrower open end with a piercing to one face only (apparently). The object is perhaps of Bronze Age date (2,500-800 BC) and related to gold ornaments/ strips known from the Bronze Age of Southern England. Both faces of the object retain traces of decoration in the form of numerous longitudinally-arranged raised ridges of rectangular section, parallel to each other. It isn't possible to determine what the reverse of the sheet-gold looks like. To one edge of the object the sheet is unbroken/ undamaged …

A folded piece of sheet gold (0.5mm thick), with a stamped or worked repoussé design. The piece resembles a narrow, rectangular band that has been folded flat on top of itself, overlapping for approx. 6.5mm. The visible end is cut diagonally. The two long parallel edges of the object are intact, both with a slight rim. The decoration takes the form of interlaced M-shapes stacked vertically.

A piece of circular-section gold rod of even cross-section and with a pincer cut at either end (giving a D-shaped cross-section at this point). The D-shape is angled into either end and to the reverse of rod is a flat triangular faceting, presumably from the tool (or an accompanying tool) used for the cut. It measures 15.4mm in length and has a diameter at the centre of 2.9mm. The ends measure 3.5x2.6mm and 3.3x2.9mm. The object weighs 1.53g. Discussion: Such a small and undiagnostic fragment cannot be identified or dated definitively. However, similar fragments (with similar c…

An apparently complete sheet-gold object of rectangular shape and with a perforation at the centre of each short end, perhaps of Bronze Age date (2,500-800 BC). The object shows signs of being transversely folded or bent multiple times along its length. Both perforations (c.0.8mm diameter) are made from the same side of the object to its opposite side. The object is perhaps related to gold ornaments/ strips known from the Bronze Age of Southern England. The object measures 57.3mm in length, 6.7mm in max.width (varying along the length by 0.5mm), 0.3mm in thickness and weighs 1.58g.

A probably incomplete and bent triangular-shaped piece of sheet gold 0.7mm thick, of probable Bronze Age date (2,500-800 BC). The apex is foreshortened with an original cut edge; the opposite edge is jagged and bent over. The two angled edges are original edges and flanked with a single groove (faintly visible to the reverse). There is a 1.8mm diameter piercing, offset and just below the apex. This has been pushed through from the front to the reverse, a ring-like edge being visible to the reverse. The object is bent transversely at c.135 degrees, roughly across the centre. It measure…

Description: A piece of folded and squashed gold sheet (0.4mm thick), now rectangular in shape. The object appears to have been folded longitudinally into four layers, then in half horizontally with the ends folded in, but these horizontal folds are now 'un'folded. Several rounded corners can be made out amidst the folded gold. Dimensions and metal content: The object measures roughly 28.2mm in length, 22.9mm in width and 7.4mm in thickness. It weighs 7.98g Metal composition: Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis undertaken by the Science department of the British Museum i…

An apparently complete strip of gold, probably of Bronze Age date. It consists of three originally separate strands, now conjoined. The strands are D-shaped in cross-section and the object is now bent, as though possibly originally a ring shape (with the flat surface to the inside). It measures 6.8mm in width, 1.9mm in thickness and weighs 5.06g. It measures 31.5mm in length (bent) and probably originally measured c.40mm in length (unbent).

Roman gem-set gold ornament, possibly part of a composite brooch. The oval gold box setting, its upper edge lightly rubbed over the edge of the gem, has vertical sides and a flat base, with large oval central aperture revealing the flat back of the gem. A filigree beaded wire arcaded design runs round the side of the setting with an encircling filigree beaded wire at the base. Four tiny D-shaped flanged projections, symmetrically arranged one centrally on each side (one distorted), comprise a central dome-headed rivet encircled by the basal filigree beaded wire. At the back the base…
