Treasure case 2007 T575. A small spherical droplet of gold, measuring 5.5mm in diameter and weighing 4 grams. The surface is smooth and only slightly pitted. There is no decoration though some evidence for small hammer marks on the rod. Due to the undiagnostic nature of the find it can not be securely dated to pre-1707 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

Description: A gold hoop probably dating to the post-medieval period, almost certainly modern. The hoop is circular in shape and is formed from a single gold wire that has been twisted along its length. There is a small crimp visible, where the wire has been joined. Dimensions: The diameter is 9.2mm and it weighs 0.2g. Discussion: If a ring, this is very small when compared, for example with NMS-4AFCF9. Other examples of twisted wire rings are made of two interwoven strands, such as LON-031583. Conclusion: In terms of precious metal content, this artefact qualifies as T…

Cast, gold fragment. The fragment is oblong, solid and was once part of a larger object. It is roughly D-shaped in cross section and tapering in height towards one end. At the higher end, the fragment appears to have been chopped. The shorter end shows some damage and it seems that part of the underside has been cut away here. The underside of the object is flat apart from a small dent and some minor ?cracks. The upper, curved, side is divided into two panels by a band running along the middle axis. It meets another band, that frames the lower edge of the object, at the narrower end. T…

Solid gold cylindrical fragment which is partly flattened on one side (unclear if intentional or due to damage). The surface has some abrasions and light scratching. It appears to have been cut at both ends; possibly a piece of hack gold dating from the Early Medieval period. Dimensions: Weight: 3.6g, Length: 13.8mm, Thickness: 4.8mm. Discussion: It is likely to be over 300 years old. This suggestion is made due to the colour and apparent quality of the gold, as well as the lack of machine made marks, and comparisons to similar artefacts like SWYOR-C74077, DENO-68B0E8

Angela Evans of the British Museum provided the following report. Late 6th or early 7th century Early Medieval gold sword pommel cap of high cocked-hat form decorated with panels of beaded wire filigree. The pommel cap is damaged and distorted but retains details of both faces, the top and the side panels. Each face is divided into three panels by fillets of gold sheet arranged in the shape of an inverted Y. The outer panels are each filled by an identical peg-headed zoomorph with open flaring jaws and a body that interlaces asymmetrically to fill the irregular field. The central, low…

Description: An incomplete circular gold and garnet cloisonné setting, probably once part of a larger composite object. The gold base-plate is circular and plain on the reverse. It is split around much of the circumference, and a wedge-shaped section has been torn away from the centre to one edge, probably where a central attachment rivet or tube became detached (see Discussion). The setting has a double frame consisting of an outer band of twisted, gold beaded wires and an inner border of a single, untwisted gold beaded wire. The inner border has a slight gap in its circumferen…

An incomplete circular gold setting, probably once part of a larger composite object. Description: The setting has a thick, double frame consisting of a band of twisted, gold beaded wire with a ring of single, untwisted gold beaded wire above. Inside this is a broad, upright gold strip forming a collar for the setting. The setting itself is now empty, with no clear remains of a stone or gold foil. A greyish substance is visible inside, running around much of the circumference at the junction between collar and base-plate. This may be the remains of cement that held the original set…

Treasure case 2009 T626 Description: Plain gold band; slightly misshapen. Flattened edges on the band indicate that this is a fitting rather that a finger-ring. Treasure 2008 T578: Gold ring The shape of this object suggests that this is more likely to be a decorative mount or fitting of some kind rather than a finger-ring.
