Gold Iron Age quarter stater. Philip de Jersey states that this stater is a new example, not found in the major catalogues. It appears to be a derivative of the imported Gallo-Belgic D quarter stater (VA 69), possibly with some influence from Kentish quarters (VA 145, 147), and probably dates to c. 50 BC. There are ten examples in the CCI, including this one, five with the S on the obverse the right way round, and five with it reversed, as here. Reliably provenanced examples are all from Essex, so it's very likely to be a local (Trinovantian?) production.
