Description: A gold hoop probably dating to the post-medieval period, almost certainly modern. The hoop is circular in shape and is formed from a single gold wire that has been twisted along its length. There is a small crimp visible, where the wire has been joined. Dimensions: The diameter is 9.2mm and it weighs 0.2g. Discussion: If a ring, this is very small when compared, for example with NMS-4AFCF9. Other examples of twisted wire rings are made of two interwoven strands, such as LON-031583. Conclusion: In terms of precious metal content, this artefact qualifies as T…

Description: Roughly circular or slightly oval gold object, apparently made from a piece of flat sheet. An oval area in the centre has been raised, and this pierced in the centre by a small circular hole c. 1mm in diameter. The face with the raised centre has fine concentric lines scratched or engraved around the flange, and an edge which appears slightly thickened in places. The raised centre has broad lines scored across it, perhaps as a result of damage while in the soil. The other face does not appear to have any markings other than those caused by general wear and tear. The circu…

An irregular droplet of gold, measuring 13.57mm by 11.89mm by 6.85mm. Weight 6.83 grams. Date: Unknown Iron Age coins have been recovered from the same area, and it has been suggested that this piece of gold may have been connected with Iron Age gold working, such as coin production or recycling. However, a similar piece (2004 T408) was determined to be undiagnostic and undatable following metal analysis. As such, although the object has over 10% precious metal content by weight, the undiagnostic nature of the artefact means that it cannot be definitively dated pre1710 and as such…

Treasure 2008 T578: Gold ring The shape of this object suggests that this is more likely to be a decorative mount or fitting of some kind rather than a finger-ring.
