An incomplete gold setting of modern date (post 1720), comprising a gold frame set with a dark red highly-domed cabochon-cut gem, probably a garnet. The frame has a sheet gold back plate and a piriform cell made from an upright rectangular collet of gold, housing the polished gem. The frame is surrounded by a collar of gold wire with a twisted or beaded effect, forming a triangular shield-shape with pointed angles around the cell. The pendant is lunate in shape with terminals curved into a spiral. These terminals are now twisted and distorted, one forwards and one backwards. TREASURE CASE: 2013 T466 Description: A gold medieval pendant roundel with a square shaped central bezel set with an amethyst. The pendant frame has been formed from twisted gold wire and has four suspension loops which have been soldered onto the frame. Three of the suspension loops have chain link attachments which would have once held a terminal attachment, possibly a pearl. Early medieval Anglo-Saxon gold and garnet pendant, complete. Gold pendant with ribbed attachment loop, with a large, sub-oval cabochon garnet with abraded surface, set inside a plain, squeezed frame which is broken in one place. The back is plain. Length 20.0mm, width 15.1mm, thickness across centre 4.1mm, width of loop 4.3mm, internal diameter of loop 1.8mm, weight 2.49g. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of the pendant indicated a gold content of 62-67%, a silver content of 31-33% and at least 2% copper. Description: Early medieval pendant; gold saxon pendant with shaped red stone setting, probably a garnet. The pendant dates from the early-mid 7th century. The setting is of sheet gold with a beaded rim around the edge.
