CURATOR'S REPORT
A gold pendant, incorporating a Visigothic gold tremissis in the name of the Roman Emperor Anastasius I of Byzantium (r.491-518).
Description of find
The coin has been made into a pendant, showing the Victory reverse, probably in England in the 6th or early 7th century, when coin-jewellery of this type was fashionable. It shows two suspension points, which may have been made at the same time. It appears to have a gold suspension loop, but only a small piece now survives; this is plainer than is usual for the period, being a simple flat bar, soldered to one side…

A gold bar fragment of uncertain date, possibly Iron Age (800BC - 100AD). The fragment has a circular cross-section and each end is snipped off at 90º to each other. Curator's report: 2009T265 Description: A cut fragment of round section Discussion: Cut sections of gold metal have been discovered at the Iron Age site of Snettisham, Norfolk, and therefore it was considered that this object may also date from the same period. Unfortunately this object is undiagnostic, and as such metal analysis was requested. Non-destructive analysis of the surface metal content shows it is 84-87% gold…

A scattered hoard of 18 Iron Age gold staters.
The Coins
The coins consist of 4 gold staters and 14 gold quarter staters of types, the majority of which are types associated with the Cantii, a people thought to have inhabited parts of modern Kent during the late Iron Age. The three LZ3 type staters are traditionally associated with the people known as the Trinovantes, and are also found in the South-Eastern area of England. All were produced from the mid to late first century BC. The composition of the present group is similar to the earlier finds.
Some of the coins had the s…

Treasure case 2009 T208 - returned to finder
Gold fede ring with clasped hands holding a heart, rosettes flanking the ‘cuffs’. Inscribed ‘Noe recompense but love’. Maker’s mark MB in rectangle: the same mark is on British Museum finger-ring 1961,1202.254 but not identifiable in any standard reference works (see BM website under search the collection database/museum provenance and number search for images). The design of the ring suggests an 18th Century date rather than 17th Century date, and it is therefore unlikely to be more than 300 years old.

Date: possibly 19th Century
Description:
Gold ring (?) in the form of a flat strip expanding slightly towards one side which has a square raised rim on three sides, possibly the remains of a setting for a stone. However, the shape of the hoop is unusual; it does not conform to the standard shapes for the post-medieval rings of the 16th-18th century and may therefore be later.
Discussion: In the absence of any firm dating evidence it is not possible to confirm that this ring is more than 300 years old.

Description: Post-Medieval gold finger-ring. Plain D-shaped band, slightly misshapen. Plain, worn interior with no makers mark or inscription
Dimensions: Diameter: 22mm
Band width: 3.3mm
Thickness: 0.8mm
Weight: 3g
Discussion: The absence of maker's mark or inscription means it is not possible to accurately date this ring.
Due to the undiagnostic nature of the find it cannot be securely dated to pre-1710 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

A Post Medieval gold finger Ring. The ring is formed of a plain gold band with a 'D' shaped cross section. There is no decoration on the outside of the band. Inside there is an inscribed legend: HOPE *HELFETH *GREE. It is possible the last letter is meant to represent an 'F'.
The band is 18.1mm in diamter, 3.4mm wide, 1.1mm thick and weighs 2.29g.
The inscription is recorded by Joan Evans (English Posies and Posy Rings, Oxford 1931, p. 48) as 'Hope helpeth griefe' and is included in the Harleian Manuscript of 1596, providing evidence that this inscription was in use by this date…

A narrow gold band (4mm thick) with slightly convex sides, inscribed inside in seriffed lowercase letters: 'I wis to finde a constant minde', followed by the maker's mark (crowned DC) and the letters WPM (P above W & M). The edges are sharp suggesting that this ring has hardly been worn. The size of the ring is 20mm (internal diameter).
Discussion: The seriffed letter text is found on rings from 16th Century through to 18th Century. The maker's mark on this ring can be paralleled to an example in the British Museum collections 1961,1202.339, dated to 18th Century.
