CORONER'S REPORT Description of Object A Roman gold finger-ring with oval hoop (slightly distorted in its narrowest arc), which expands to form rounded keeled shoulders flanking a flat, slender, elongated ovoid bezel incised with the Greek word EUTYXI - 'Good fortune to you (the wearer)', or 'May you (the wearer) prosper'. The size and spacing of the letters is a little irregular but they are neatly cut with well-formed seriphs. They retain much of their black-coloured inlay, probably niello. Discussion For the ring type, though with differe…

Description of find Fragment of an early medieval, torn and distorted gold setting, still containing some ?garnet cloisonné. In a separate bag, two tiny garnet fragments and a small fragment of wavered gold foil with an upright cell wall. The gold setting appears to have been one end of an originally ?oval (presuming that it was symmetrical) object. It is warped and the wider end of the ?oval tore off at one point, damaging the object severely and leaving a jagged edge behind. On an open, horizontal …

Modern gold finger ring, with openwork lozenge bezel set with a small stone. The circular band is plain and undecorated. The inside of the band has the hallmark 750 in lozenge / (five pointed star)18 AR in rectangle / CD in oval Both the 750 and 18 relate to the purity, which in this case is 18 carat gold. As the 750 is not accompanied by a crown, it makes the hallmark continental rather than British. No exact match for the hallmark could be found; the star is used by several countries on the continent, including Norway and Spain. The AR and CD could represent the assay office, o…

An irregular droplet of gold, measuring 13.57mm by 11.89mm by 6.85mm. Weight 6.83 grams. Date: Unknown Iron Age coins have been recovered from the same area, and it has been suggested that this piece of gold may have been connected with Iron Age gold working, such as coin production or recycling. However, a similar piece (2004 T408) was determined to be undiagnostic and undatable following metal analysis. As such, although the object has over 10% precious metal content by weight, the undiagnostic nature of the artefact means that it cannot be definitively dated pre1710 and as such…
