Object type: PENANNULAR RING
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Small penannular gold ring of sub-circular section with decorative narrow banding in yellow and paler gold; corrosion of the silver-rich stripes has caused blackening in places. The external surfaces are patchily worn. The gap is bridged by green corrosion products probably deriving from a base metal core. External diameter 14mm-15mm; internal diameter circa 7mm; breadth 4.5mm; width of gap circa 2mm; weight 4.13 grams. Composition Surface analysis indicated gold and silver contents od approx. 57% and 40% respectively. Identification A well known Late Bronze Age type, d…

Penannular gold ring with hoop of circular cross-section; original decorative banding in broad stripes of yellow and paler gold are very worn and best perceptible near inner surface. Roughness of gold at one terminal could be due to damage. The surface is heavily worn; scores and scrapes are likely to have occurred post-depositionally. Visual inspection suggests that the piece comprises a gold covering over a base metal core. Diameter 18-18.5mm; internal diameter 6.5mm; breadth 6.5mm; weight 9.51 grams. A well known Late Bronze Age type, decorative in character, dating to circ…

Report to H M Coroner on find of potential Treasure from Radway, Warwickshire. 2005 T552 Small gold penannular ring with traces of decorative banding in close-set narrow stripes, which would originally have shown as bands of yellow and paler gold. The alternate stripes of softer metal are somewhat eroded and the banded effect is now difficult to see with the naked eye. The piece is worn, especially around the circumference. Closer inspection in the laboratory showed that the ring is solid, and has complex three-tone striping; this is analogous to a ring in the British Museum collect…

CORONER'S REPORT A Bronze Age gold ribbon fragment from Ansley, Warwickshire. Circumstances of discovery A gold ribbon ornament was found by Mr Simon Hall whilst metal detecting in August 1999 on the cultivated land owned by Mr Dave Goadby. The find did not appear to have any accompanying material though a pebble track heading in the general direction of the find had been ploughed out in living memory. Description of object 1. Gold ribbon fragment. The object is a gold fragment of a parallel sided strip, or ribbon. One end is neatly broken forming a straight edge whilst…

A wrought gold loop on unknown date, but probably Bronze Age. The loop is formed from wrought gold wire (th: 2.57mm) which has been bent into a drop shape. Where the ends cross, the loop has been cut, with evidence for four strikes. One cut put a wedge in the object but did not completely sever it. A second cut severed one end of the loop. The two remaining cuts are both part of the severing of the other end of the loop. The gold is probably a gold-silver alloy. There are no direct comparisons, but similar cutmarks have been observed on Bronze Age gold objects, for example no 25.1 in …

Gold rod, possibly from an unfinished twisted torc or arm/neck ornament. It is square in section with two broken ends. These edges have been made using a swage with a triangular indentation which creates a feathery edge that has then been hammered back into the metal, as they could not file them off as they would now, and can be seen as wavy lines on the sides of the fragment (Martin Page pers comm). Similar examples have been found individually, from Paul parish (CORN-B6B241). If it is an unfinished twisted neck ornament as seems possible, then it would date from the Middle Bronze Ag

The lunula terminal is complete yet somewhat bent, the only break showing where it broke off of the main part of the broad, crescent-shaped collar. The terminal weighs 6.86g and has the dimensions of 47.48x25.97x0.63mm. No surface metal analysis was carried out but the precious metal content (gold) will be more than 10%. The lunula terminal was found whilst out metal-detecting on farmland near Brampton, Cumbria. The terminal (or 'horn') consists of a flat part which is shaped like the bowl of a spoon which is connected by a short 'stalk' to an elongated part with flat-rectangul…

Gold fragment of a twisted torc, or arm/neck ornament, with three-flanged twisted body, which is triangular in section, and expanded terminal, which is circular in section. Twisted ornaments from this period are normally four-flanged and square in section, so this example is unusual, and perhaps was rejected as it has been levered off the longer piece at one end and folded in on itself, ready to be placed in a crucible and melted down to be re-used. The terminal also looks unfinished. Similar examples have been found in a gold hoard from Amalveor, Towednack, also in Penwith, but these…

Penannular gold ring comprising a gold covering over a base metal core; this is usually a copper alloy. The piece has fairly fine stripes, probably of yellow and paler gold, but this decorative effect is extremely worn and heavily stained red-brown. The central area and gap are plugged with corrosion products which also form an excrescence on one side of the gap. External diameter 20x18mm; internal diameter about 7mm; width of gap about 2mm; breadth 7mm; weight 13.86 grams. Rings of this type date to circa 1150-750 BC.

TREASURE CASE : 2003 T198 Penannular ring with narrow stripes of yellow and paler gold; the latter shows some black tarnish. The outer surface of the ring is very worn in patches, including the top of the hoop. The terminals are flat and display some tearing and 'pushing in', indicating that the piece may consist of a gold covering over a core of some other material (usually base metal). This was confirmed in the laboratory. There is a marked ridge internally, along the length of the hoop. There is some distortion of the striping (which is extremely fine), which could have occurr…

A plain and elongate gold strip with near parallel sides. One terminal survives, while the other has been torn around 4-7mm from the end. The surviving terminal is loosely folded over, with an external width of 3.5-5mm. The terminal tapers gradually beyond the fold-over, with a flat but slightly convex shaped end and rounded corners. An offset crease, parallel to the terminal-end is visible 2.2-2.5mm from the edge, the strip terminal also being pinched and thinned beyond the crease. Approximately 4mm from the terminal, a pin-hole approximately 0.8mm in diameter perforates the strip. D…

A small fragment of gold strip tapering to a tongue-shaped terminal, where it has been pierced, slightly off-centre. The piercing has been carried out from the slightly less dull side. The piece is very weathered, and there is some cracking across the width where it seems to have been folded. Surviving length 38.5mm; maximum surviving width 10.5mm; thickness less than 0.5mm; weight 1.63 grams. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface indicated a gold content of 84-87 %, silver content of 10-13 %, the remainder being copper. The fragment is part of a larger piece, whi…

An undatable worked strip of gold, reminiscent in shape of a medieval strap-end or possibly a pendant Bronze Age in date. One end (the wider, 9.6mm wide) is broken (recent-ish) and the strap then tapers to an end 4.2mm wide with a broken loop (also recent-ish) projecting from it (internal diameter c.2.2mm). The long edges are finished. One face has an indented line flanking the long edges and curving round behind the projecting loop. Measures 32.3mm in length and weighs 1.24g. A small fragment of gold, rather crudely worked, although some of the dents are likely to be damage. One end is a narrow, twisty rod of round section, possibly an original terminal. This flares into a 'tab' the end of which is not certainly intact. It is therefore possible it continued as a longer ribbon. Sheet gold disc with double perforation placed slightly off-centre. Five roughly executed concentric grooves surround a central zone containing lightly punched dots which look fairly irregular but for one more regular circle of dots surrounding the perforations. The grooves are perceptible as raised lines on the 'reverse', but the dots are barely discernible although this is the more polished side and the perforations have been made from this face. The piece is somewhat crumpled and crimped at the edges. There is little recent damage apart from a very small tear near the outer edge, a…
