Unidentified gold object. It consists of an apparently solid truncated cone with concave sides (a bell shape), and a narrow tube set transversely on the top. The tube appears to be hollow (although now filled with soil) and is 10.5 mm long; it is basically 2 mm in diameter, but has a collar of beaded wire around either end and a line of similar beaded wire along the top. An Anglo-Saxon gold and garnet setting, originally circular but now heavily damaged, with most cells empty; plus a separate garnet and foil. A now distorted quatrefoil int he centre preserves remains of a white inlay (scientific examination (see below) suggested that this is probably shell). A cut fragment of a solid gold curvilinear rod. The rod has a roughly circular section and the outer edges are slightly faceted rather than smooth. Either end appears to have been cut rather than broken. 7.69mm in length, 3.61mm in width 1.06g in weight. As this fragment was discovered on a predominately 5th-7th century Anglo-Saxon settlement site it is perhaps most likely to be of this date and may be evidence of metal working.
