A hammered gold sheet of uncertain date. The sheet has a maximum length of 51.4mm, width of 39.3mm, 0.7mm thick and weighs 14.76g. The sheet is lacking any diagnostic features so the use and date cannot be determined. Small percussion marks on the surface indicate the sheet was intentionally flattened before being deposited, discarded, or lost. Due to the uncertainty of the date, the object is not considered Treasure under the Treasure Act 1996.

An amorphous glob of gold, that survives as evidence of gold working of an uncertain date. Description: The gold is very pure, with a slightly pitted surface of a solidified fluid. One end of the glob is larger and heavier with a long neck to a small round terminal. Discussion: The high purity, pitted surface and solidified fluid form confirms that this gold has been (re)worked rather than being an example of a naturally occurring nugget of gold ore. As the gold is undiagnostic and cannot be proven to be more than 300 years old, the object does not qualify as Treasure.

An incomplete fragment of gold of uncertain function and form. The fragment of gold is sub rectangular in plan and flat. Facets are present on both surfaces, suggesting that it has been hammered, they create an almost cross like shape. It measures 9.0 mm in length, 7.6 mm wide and 1.1 mm thick. It weighs 0.6 g. As the original function and form can not be determined from this small fragment, it is undiagnostic of age and can not be proven to be older than 300 years. It therefore falls outside of the requirements of the Treasure Act 1996 and should be considered to be …

A fragment of twisted gold wire of uncertain date and function, most likely part of an earring or other item of jewellery. The wire originally had a square cross section and has been twisted along most of its length and bent into an S-shape. There is a short section of around 10mm on the outside of the larger bend which appears not to have been twisted; this may be an original feature relating to the function of the object, perhaps suggestive of a suspension loop.

A gold disc, circular in plan. The centre on both faces appears to have been impressed, creating a thick, bulging, rim of uneven width and roughly surfaced. In the centre of on one face are the vestiges of a coin-like design though it is unrecognizable and is smaller in diameter than any known gold coins.

TREASURE CASE : 2018 T19. Description: A gold ingot of uncertain date. The ingot is ovate in plan and section with slight pitting to one side. No distinctive marks such as nicks or hammering are present. Dimensions: Length: 24.8mm; Width: 7.3mm; Thickness: 6.1mm; Weight: 10.66g. Discussion: Gold and silver ingots are frequently presumed to be of Viking origin as the Vikings operated a bullion economy where the purity and weight of the metal were more important than the form. Although this bullion economy primarily utilised silver it did also include gold though this …

The ridge along the top of the ingot is uneven and to either side of the ridge the sides vary in their slopes (un-uniform), with one slope being longer than the other. There is a slight ridge on the underside of the ingot. The ends of the ingot appear to have been cut or clipped, probably from a larger ingot. Description: Roughly rectangular flat gold bar, tapered and cut at both ends. This has apparently been hammered at both ends, as it has tapered vertically towards both ends, while also expanding sideways.
