Description: The hoop, once circular in plan, is now bent slightly and D-shaped in cross-section. The exteriror surface is plain while the interiror is engraved with an inscription. The inscription, which runs around the internal circumference, is in lower case, italic and reads 'Hope is all my comfort’. There is a visible makers mark which is unidentifiable.

Description & identification
The reported object is a decorative gold posy ring. The ring consists of a thin gold band, D-shaped in section, with a tightly set repeating pattern of tooled S-shaped indentations on the external surface, possibly for enamel, although none appears to have survived. The internal surface in engraved with an inscription which reads ‘Though absent yet constant’ in italic letters in sentence case. The ring profile is slightly misshapen.

A gold finger ring of Post Medieval to Modern date (c. AD 1700-2000).
The finger ring is made from a single strand of gold wire, regularly twisted around its entire circumference and with both ends joined by solder. There is very little wear on the ring and there are no maker's marks or hallmarks. The band has a regular width of c. 1.17mm and regular thickness of c. 1.15mm. The ring is slightly bent so that it is sub-circular to sub-oval in plan rather than being entirely circular.

The object is circular with a thick D-shaped section. No decoration or hallmarks are present and there are two nick marks to the edge.
The metal has a shiny yellow patina and is in good condition. The ring is 25.4mm in diameter, 5.6mm wide, 1.9mm thick and weighs 11.8g.
The finger ring has been seen by curators at the British Museum who state that, due to the undiagnostic nature of the object it cannot be securely dated and, as such, would fall outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

On the face of the ring is engraved a three-quarter left facing skull, that has large recessed circular eyes, a pointed nasal cavity in-between; a single row of teeth below and a rounded brain case to the right to complete the skull. A Post Medieval gold finger ring. A posy ring with the internal inscription Let vertue be thy guide in italic lettering. There is no maker’s or other mark. The hoop has a D-shaped cross section and is slightly distorted into an oval shape.

Description: A complete but slightly squashed Post Medieval cast gold gilt finger ring. The ring is made of a circular hoop squashed into a slight oval shape with an ornamental bezel.
The bezel is 6.8mm wide and c17.7mm long. It depicts a pair of clasped hands over a small heart, the top of which projects from the upper edge of the hands. Each hand is marked with an elaborate lace-like ruffed cuff.

The button consists of a small disc decorated with a separately attached twisted filigree wire around the outer border. In the centre is a raised incomplete attachment. The disc is slightly bent into itself. In the centre of the reverse is a separately attached circular loop that has become flattened against the head of the button.
