A fragment of gold, likely hack gold from a penannular bracelet of Bronze Age date, possibly c.1100-850 BC. Description: The object is broadly 'axe-shaped' with a sub-circular terminal that tapers to a flat rectangular cross section. This was likely achieved by cutting and hammering. The tapered end has been cut, indicated by a bright rugged cut. The terminal also appears to have been cut from a larger object and then hammered smooth. The gold has a rich, bright yellow colour.  Measurements: Length: 14.77 mm; Width: 7.03 mm; Thickness: 6.43 …

Description: Piece of gold rod, probably a small fragment of a flange-twisted or bar-twisted torc with three flanges, now bent into a spiral of two full turns. One end is original, with a rounded tip and neat triangular cross-section. From the rounded tip, the terminal flares slightly for c. 10mm and runs straight, before starting to coil. As it starts to curve, each face becomes concave so that the cross-section is Y-shaped, and the rod is then neatly twisted as well as bent into a coil. After two full turns the rod is apparently cut or broken. It is…

A gold penannular ring of late Bronze Age date. The ring is 17.5mm in diameter and has a circular cross section of 6mm diameter, with a gap of 2mm between the flat ends. The ring appears to be solid gold rather than plated as there are no evident cracks or fracturing in the surface which would be expected from corrosion of a copper alloy core. An apparently complete, though slightly squashed, Late Bronze Age (1000-800 BC) gold penannular ring (or 'lock-ring'). It is hollow and triangular in cross-section, formed of two flat (angled) outer faces and an internal slightly concave face. The damage to one of the outer faces reveals a hollow interior and the faces formed of conjoined, narrow, circular-sectioned gold wires. There are sixteen of these wires on each outer face with an additional spinal wire at the outermost join and a wire forming the outer edges of the internal face along the opposite (inner) join. The inter…

A gold fragment, possibly from a bracelet or torc, dating to the Middle Bronze Age, c. 1400-1150 BC (probably Penard phase, c. 1300 - 1100 BC). The fragment is broadly rectangular in cross section and measures 26.58mm in length. It has been loosely twisted, probably as part of decoration. The twist is regular which suggests this was part of the object when it was worn rather than occurring during later deposition. The fragment is ‘hooked’ in shape overall and weighs 8.35g. The break on the shorter end of the fragment appears to be cut. Dimensions: Length,&nb…

A probably Late Bronze Age (1100-750 BC) solid gold ring of hexagonal cross-section, with flat upper and lower faces, and the internal and external faces to either side being angled. Two areas opposite each other display some wear gloss on the inner surfaces. The outer faces have fairly uniform lack of wear, but do have some scratches. It is 28.4mm external diameter, 20.5mm internal diameter, 4mm thick and weighs 13.2g. The internal angle makes it unlikely that this ring was worn as a finger ring. Due to the condition and the small size of the fragment the overall design is unclear. The sheet has been folded into two and it is difficult to establish if this is deliberate and post depositional or later damage in the ploughsoil. What remains of the decorative design consists of a series of nine circular pointille bosses formed with a round headed punch or awl that has been worked from the underside to create the form. Each band is sub-circular (oval) in cross-section and the ring is sub-circular (oval) when viewed in plan. The terminals are flat and meet in the centre. There are scuff marks located near the terminal on the outer side. In the soldered recess on either side of the terminals, there is slight cracking which can be seen under a microscope. Small strip of gold wound around a strip of gold wire. The gold strip on this peice of 'hack' gold is wound around the bars three times.
