A worn golden guinea of James II, AD 1685-1688, dating to AD 1685. The flan has a milled edge. Obverse shows a laureate head left. Obverse legend reads IACOBVS. II. DEI. GRATIA. Reverse shows a cruciform, which consists of four crowned shields with sceptres in the angles. Reverse legend reads 16-85. MAG-ER. FRA- ET. HIB- REX. Die axis is 6 o'clock. Weight: 8.16g, Diameter: 25.23mm, Thickness: 1.03mm.

Description: A post-medieval gold guinea of James II (1685-8), dated 1688 (Spink 3402). The coin has been pierced near the edge above the bust (i.e. at the 12 o'clock position on the obverse). The perforation is oval in shape due to wear, pulling the edge outwards suggesting the coin was probably suspended as a pendant. Dimensions: 25.1mm diameter. 8.05g. Discussion: This is a coin which has been altered to become a pendant. The wear pattern of the loop suggests it was a well-worn pendant. Half touch piece of James II. The obverse legend is IACO.II D.G. M.B. Fr. E[T. HI. REX] (James II, by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland). The ship that appears on the obverse is only faintly visible due to wear. The reverse legend is [SOLI. DEN.] GLORIA (To God alone the Glory). The top right half of St Michael and the Dragon are visible. The item has been pierced for wear as a talisman and cut deliberately.
