A complete Late Iron Age gold stater of the Western Region / Dobunni, dating from c. AD 20-43. The coin is struck for the ruler Eisu, and appears to be a variant of both ABC 2075 (Cottam et al's 'Eisu Ricu') and ABC 2078 (Cottam et al's 'Eisu Tree'). The style of the horse suggests it maybe ABC 2078, which is a more common issue than ABC 2075.

A Late Iron Age gold stater. Classification: Western Gold of 'EISV'. Ref.: British Museum nos. 3039-3041 (Hobbs 1996: 169); Van Arsdell no. 1105 (1989: 280). Dimensions: diameter: 18mm; thickness: 2.5mm. Weight: 4.24g. The surface of this coin has attached copper-alloy corrosion, indicating the use of debased gold. This debasement is discussed by Van Arsdell (ibid. 266), who identifies a gradual decline in the gold content of Dobunnic staters, which by the time of the EISV coins (AD c. 10 to c. 40) was down to 2.2g of fine gold.
