Description:  An Early Medieval gold spangle dating to circa AD 450-500. The extant element is trapezoidal and flat. It has no decoration on either face. A small punched perforation is situated at the narrower end of the piece which would have acted as a suspension loop. Length: 14.5mm; Width: 7.4mm; Thickness: 0.2mm; Weight: 0.20g. Discussion:  The piece would have been suspended as part of a larger set forming a spangle, similar to a more complete piece: 2009 T440. Early Saxon gold composite spangles or pendant: a square sheet plate is set lozenge-wise and pierced for suspension at one corner, the top of the perforation is almost worn through. Wire rings with wound ends hang from the other three corners, each holding a smaller square sheet plate pierced for suspension in one corner. There is a repoussé boss in the centre of all four plates. A horseshoe-shaped stamp consisting of ten trapezoidal impressions has been struck four times on the larger plate, while the smaller ones are decorated with punched dots. Small parts of two smaller plates ar…
