I have examined three coins reported found in the Great Dunmow area, Essex. The coins are all gold quarter-nobles of King Edward III and will therefore be over 23 carats fine, or about 96% good gold. The quarter-noble was the smallest of the three gold denominations of later medieval English currency, worth 1s.8d. (20-pence), so three were worth 60-pence, or five shillings. Their details are as follows:
Edward III
Third Coinage, second issue (1346-51)
Quarter-noble North 1112 2.10g (JL)
Quarter-noble North 1112 …

In August 2003 members of the Sedgeford Historical and Archaeological Research Project (S.H.A.R.P.) discovered 20 Iron Age gold coins concealed within or associated with a cowbone, using a metal-detector in the course of archaeological excavation. The objects were brought to the British Museum for examination on 22 September. 19 further coins were discovered in the vicinity.
All 39 coins belong to the same type. They are so-called 'Gallo-Belgic E' staters, made in the first century BC, probably in northern France. These coins are frequently found in southern Britain where they circu…

The Hackney Hoard
The 80 coins are all gold 20-dollar pieces (so-called 'double eagles') of the United States, issued between 1854 and 1913. The coins are thus all the same denomination, introduced in this form in 1850, and were struck to the same standard, 90% gold, used from 1837 until the end of US gold coinage in 1933. The catalogue shows that the coins gradually increase in number across the decades from 1870 to 1909 (13 coins from 1870-9; 14 from 1880-89; 18 from 1890-99; and 25 from 1900-9). Over a quarter of the total were issued in the last 6 six years represented. Toget…
