A hoard of 50 1oz South African Krugerrand gold coins struck by the Rand Refinery in Germistone, South Africa and comprised of 48 coins minted in 1974 (bags 1-48) and 2 coins minted in 1975 (bags 49-50).  The hoard was discovered during the 2020 Coronavirus lockdown and remained with finder until 07/10/2020 due to social distancing restrictions.  The coins were divided between two white plastic coin tubes, one wrapped in a small white towel with pink edging and secured with an elastic band, the other wrapped in an NS&I envelop and pages from a magazin…

Two gold nobles of late medieval England and will be of very high gold fineness - over 23 carats. All of the coins are British Iron Age gold staters that would have been produced between about 60 and 50 BC. These coins are therefore roughly contemporary with the invasions of Britain by Julius Caesar (in 55 and 54 BC). Both coins are British Iron Age gold staters of a type known as 'British LA' or 'Whaddon Chase' (BM 295 = VA 1476). Similar coins accounted for 60 of the 73 coins reported from the same site in 2006 (2006T640). These coins would have been produced between about 60 and 50 BC. Date and Metal Content The coins satisfy the terms of the Treasure Act with regard to age and metal content. They are certainly more than 300 years old and have precious metal contents in excess of the 10% threshold. The hoard consists of 17 gold staters and 9 silver units. These are of types originating in the Northern area [this territory is thought to have been inhabited by people known as the Trinovantes]They are issued under the ruler Cunobelin and date to the period between 10 and 40AD.
