Two early medieval gold tremisses, probably dating to the early-mid seventh century. The first coin is Merovingian, and probably from Tidiriciacum (identified by Belfort as Trizay-sur-Lezay, and by Depeyrot as Thiré, both in the Vendée). The reverse inscription indicates a moneyer named Witta (VVITA) in whose name coins with this mint signature have been recorded.1 Although the obverse inscription is mostly illegible, the visible letters are consistent with a reading of TIDIRIACO, as the mint name appears on other known coins of VVITA. The second coin is an early Anglo-Sa…

TREASURE CASE 2016 T960. Three gold Merovingian tremisses (coins) dating to the early-medieval period. Date of Discovery: June 2016 (Nos. 1 and 2); May 2017 (No. 3) Circumstances of discovery: Metal-detecting on cultivated land Description: Three early medieval gold tremisses, dating to the seventh century. The first two coins are gold tremisses with inscriptions that are intended to suggest an origin in Maastricht (and, in at least the first case, from the workshop of the moneyer Rimoaldus). The inscriptions on both coins, however, are blundered to a greater or lesser extent, and t…

This coin is a pseudo-Imperial tremissis of the late 6th or very early 7th century, probably of Frankish manufacture. The inscription is too badly blundered to indicate which Byzantine emperor was being imitated, and both the obverse and reverse types are commonly found on both Byzantine and Frankish coins. Obv. Diademed bust, r., _N___VICAPPAUG Rev. Cross on steps, ___VATAUGUS___ Weight: 1.18g Die axis: 135 Diameter: 11.73mm This coin was found in close proximity to another gold tremisses (2012 T248; ESS-84D6A3) on two consecutive days; both of these coins are from a s…

This coin is a Merovingian tremissis of the mint-and moneyer type, of the period AD 580-670. The reverse inscription is illegible, but the obverse inscription shows that it was minted in, or possibly imitating, the town of Quentovic (Etaples, Pas-de-Calais). Quentovic was a major mint, and a major port, and finds from Quentovic are not unusual as finds in England, but the crude style makes it possible that this is a contemporary imitation minted elsewhere. Obv: Crude diademed bust, r., + VVICUS FIT Rev: Crude cross ancrée, illegible. Weight: 1.29g Die axis: 90 Discussion: Th…

A Merovingian tremissis of hitherto unknown type with a fragment of either another tremissis or decorated gold sheet adhering to it. The obverse depicts a diademed bust facing right with the retrograde legend BASOI FIT BH, the reverse probably a long-cross on globe, flanked by the letters AB (B retrograde) and the legend, VNE[...]S[..]X[..]S. This type is not recorded in any of the standard reference works. Adhering to it is a small fragment, probably of another coin, with what appear to be the letters ON (or NO). Late 6th or early 7th century AD. A single gold coin would no…

2011 T202 (addendum to 2010 T254 ESS-F0D125) Early Medieval coin from a Hoard As a single find of a coin, this would not normally constitute Treasure, but it was found in close proximity to two other Merovingian coins which were found together, and which were declared to be Treasure (2010 T254). The coin is a Merovingian tremissis of the mint-and-moneyer type, of the period AD 580-670. Around two-thirds of the coin survive, with the remainder apparently separated by a single clean cut, probably from a chisel. The coin has probably been deliberately cut to produce a piece of …

TREASURE CASE 2010 T254 Early Medieval coin hoard The two coins were found c. 25 feet apart. Both coins are of the 'mint and moneyer' type. One was issued at the mint of Coutances, and has the moneyer's name PIONTVS, with a curved T, possibly a blundered version of DIONYSVS. Both the mint and moneyer on the other coin are uncertain, as the inscriptions are blundered, but it may be derived from a coin of Combelenus of Cahors. 1. Merovingian gold tremissis, mint Coutances, moneyer 'Piontus'. Obv. Diademed bust, r. CVSTANCIA Rev. Cross on globe, above curved X, pelle…
