Description: A complete gold early medieval (early Anglo-Saxon) imitation bracteate. It is formed from a disc of sheet metal with a separate short strip of gold, 4.06mm wide and 0.64mm thick, soldered into a suspension loop at one side. There is no wire border framing this disc and no clear evidence that this was ever present, but a pellet border around the outer edge of the outer face is probably an imitation of this. Unusually the outer face is decorated with a stamped geometric design consisting of approximately four concentric rings of stamped Y-shapes, each of which is somewhat ra…

Description: Flat fragment of gold bracteate which has been made by hammering thin sheet gold over a die. It was originally circular, c. 39mm in diameter, but now only about a quarter of the circumference survives with edges that are a little longer than the radius. The curved edge has a short fragment of D-section plain wire frame surviving, soldered on for a short length and then bent over to the reverse; it looks as if the flat face of the wire was soldered to the edge of the disc. Inside the framing wire, the bracteate has an undecorated zone around 3-4mm wide, then a ring of punch…

Gold bracteate disc pendant of type ‘B’ with repoussé decoration of a sword-wielding male figure facing right and engaged in combat with a beak-headed quadruped, with his left hand raised against (grasping, or being bitten by?) its jaws; diameter, 44 mm approx. His raised right hand clasps a sword behind his head and his hair is indicated by vertical ribbing, giving the impression of a helmet. There are four runes above his left hand, the central two of which are damaged making reading problematic. There is a further beak-headed quadruped behind and below the warrior…

Description:  Gold A-bracteate, consisting of a thin gold disc, stamped with a design and with a suspension loop added. The design consists of a human head in profile looking left, with a hand in front of the chin holding a spray of flowers, and shoulders turned to face the viewer. The head has fine parallel grooves indicating hair, running from the crown to a fringe above the eyes, and interrupted by a double scallop-edged line (like two lines of flat beading) forming a headband or 'diadem' running around the forehead just above the eyes. The top and back …

TREASURE CASE : 2020 T295. Description: A complete gold bracteate pendant of Early-Medieval date, c.AD 450-600. The pendant comprises a disc of gold sheet that is bent and crumpled in appearance. It was stamped with a matrix die. The obverse displays a border of four concentric rings, the outer most of which is punctuated by a series of sub-triangular nicks apparently imitating a framing wire. An indistinct repoussé design with contour lines is present which is possibly an anthropomorphic bearded face. The face is turned by 90 degree in relation to the position of the loo…

Description: Complete early Anglo-Saxon C-bracteate in good condition. Circular gold sheet bracteate with repoussé design with a slightly left of centre anthropomorphic bearded face, with hooded eyes and cowled head. Curving around the head to the right (as viewed) is a zoomorphic sinuous beast with a long curving neck or body and crest-like lines going to the edge of the bracteate. The beast's head is in profile with a single eye and long gaping mouth or beak. In front of the face appears to be an animal head with two pointed elements, possibly ears, and a la…

Gold bracteate fragment. A fragment torn from the edge of a pendant disc exceeding 20mm in its diameter, and of thickness 0.7mm, now crumpled and folded. A cabled border, a closely juxtaposed circle of tiny overlapping wedges, and an elongated looping tendril are visible from one side. The other side displays similar detail, perhaps reversed as a stamped impression, together with multiple straight and curved lines which presumably contributed to a more coherent design, now obscured. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 500-600 Given its age and material this object is to be submitted …

Description: An incomplete gold C-bracteate, dating to the early-medieval period (c.AD450-600). The pendant comprises a disc of gold sheet that is bent, torn and crumpled in appearance, and of which approximately 30% is missing. The obverse features an anthropomorphic head looking left with a quadruped beaneath. Of the anthropomorphic head can be distinguished a ‘stripy’ hairstyle with a line ending behind the head in 3 curving lines forming the ribbons of the diadem (based on the imperial heads of 4th century Roman coins and medallions that served originally as model…

Early-medieval A-bracteate. A disc of beaten gold bearing a low-relief design within a stamped border, and retaining a finely billeted rim, now detached at 3 o'clock and broken at 12 o'clock relative to the design. The object also bears a ragged transverse tear extending from 10 o'clock. The central design is obviously derived from the profile diademed imperial bust appearing on late Roman coinage, though with significant adaptations which are deliberately chosen, rather than simple misconstructions of the design. A first departure from the Roman model is th…

Early Medieval gold bracteate fragment, 19mm long, 13mm wide and 0.5mm thick with a weight of 0.74grams. The object is sub-rectangular in form and cross section and represents a fraction of the edge of a bracteate pendant. This bracteate has no known English parallels but does have similarities to Scandinavian examples. Charlotte Behr writes, Description: Only a small, almost rectangular, fragment of the bracteate has been found that includes the outer edge of the gold foil between roughly '10.30 and 12.30' assuming that the projecting section of the gold foil was part of the…

An Early Medieval D-bracteate, dating AD 475-525. The pendant is nearly completely preserved with only some parts of the beaded gold wire originally attached, now partly detached, to the edge of the gold foil missing. The wire show signs of wear. The disc is heavily bent in two places, partly obscuring the design. The motif is stamped in high relief, there is a clear impression on the reverse. The loop was made with six ridges of equal size but has been strongly abraded at the top so that here only four ridges are preserved. It was soldered on both sides of the disc, on the front …

The repoussé decoration depicts a highly stylised horse and over-large bearded male head in profile facing right with four pellets below his triangular nose, a round eye with two lines indicating the lower eyelid and a hairstyle ending with a round coil and tail at the back and a triangle with a spiral in the front. The horse has a triangular ear, gaping mouth and small eye. Between the broad neck and the lower trunk are two dots. Above the large round hip and tail are two further dots. Early Medieval gold A-bracteate, 34mm long, 28mm wide and 1mm thick with a weight of 3.59 grams. The bracteate is incompletely preserved, the loop has been ripped off and about one third of the stamped outer zone on the upper right part is missing. The gold foil is heavily buckled with several tears. The lower right part has been folded which may have been intentional whilst the other damages appear to be post-depositional. The gold foil was surrounded with a beaded wire set along the edge. It is heavily abraded. Underneath the (missing) loop is a beaded gold wire attachment (but with…

A modern gold pendant. The object consists of two gold discs with pressed images, replicating probably (the details have not pressed through clearly) coin obverses (i.e. the bust side only repeated to make two halves) of the emperor Maximian (AD 286-310), with a gold disc between and a beaded rim. Such mouldings in thin gold or silver foil taken from a coin 'host' are often termed clichés and were a technique known in antiquity to produce forgeries as well as a similar technique for 'bracteate' jewellery popular in Barbaricum (beyond the Roman frontier). Although both coins and br…

A gold bracteate dating to the 6th or 7th century AD. A gold uniface pendant, imitating a Byzantine or sub-Byzantine gold solidus, probably inspired by a solidus of Anastasius (491-518). The pseudo-inscription reads DNΛTTΛN_N_T┤T┌ΛNΛNCC (all Ns reversed). This is not a literate inscription but can most plausibly be derived from a literate inscription of Anastasius (DN ANASTASIVS PP AVG), although it may simply be copying some of the more common letter forms. However, derivation from Anastasius would also be consistent with the fact that his coins are among the more common…

Treasure case 2013 T628 - Anglo-Saxon gold bracteate and gold armlet Discovery: Both objects were found in the ploughsoil whilst metal-detecting a field in which previously 4 gold bracteates and a copper alloy bracelet in three fragments had been discovered. The new bracteate was found within an area of 10 square metres in which two A-bracteates and a B-bracteate (2009T657 and 2011T657) had been found. The location of the first B-bracteate (2004T297) from the same field has not been recorded with similar precision (Behr 2010). The gold armlet has been found ca 30 metres south of th…

Gold bracteate pendant, buckled and distorted but complete. The pendant takes the form of a thin gold disc, with no framing wire surrounding the disc and no evidence for one ever being present. The central motif has been stamped with a matrix (the obverse is more sharply defined than the reverse). It is not symmetrical and not easy to decipher, partly due to creases being difficult to distinguish from deliberate decorative motifs. The following description is only an attempt to distinguish the different features: Left of the loop (at 10 o'clock) a circular animal head is shown with…

Description: An early medieval gold A-bracteate of Axboe's Group H2 (Axboe 2007, 36). The bracteate is generally in good condition, although missing its suspension loop. The gold foil is to some degree dented, signs of scratches are above the forehead and on the beads especially the one most to the left and in the area of the bust. The relief is fairly flat, and there are no contour lines. The design shows a diademed human head in profile looking left. The nose is straight and pointed, there is possibly a moustache, and the mouth is shown as a small indent. The chin is straight and po…
