Behind a victory, below a palm branch. Mint of Milan (Mediolanum), -//COM. As Hoxne no. 16; RIC IX, pp. 77-78, nos. 5e/8(a1). Coin has slight post-depositional folding to one edge. Measurements: 20.34mm in diameter, 1.27mm thick and 4.47g in weight.

A single Roman gold coin, a solidus of Arcadius, found in exactly the same area as a hoard of 26 late Roman gold solidi and 4 silver siliquae discovered in 1993. This coin is plainly part of the same hoard, missed during the 1993 excavations. It was struck in 394-5, a date that exactly accords with the latest coins in the hoard and its crisp, almost mint state, similar to that of the other coins of this date present, suggests that it had not been in circulation long when the hoard was buried. A gold solidus of Gratian (AD 367-383); VICTORIA AVGG reverse; minted at Milan during the mint's fourth period of AD 378-383. Ref: RIC Vol. IX, p. 77, no. 5d. The coin has little wear but it is slightly bent and scuffed at one point. It measures 20.6mm in diameter, 0.6mm thick and weighs 4.54g.

The coins The coins, both gold solidi, were issued by the Roman emperor Honorius (AD 393-423). One was made at the mint in his then capital Ravenna between AD 402-6, while the other was made at nearby Milan in the period AD 395-402.
