Description: A post-medieval gold guinea of James II (1685-8), dated 1688 (Spink 3402). The coin has been pierced near the edge above the bust (i.e. at the 12 o'clock position on the obverse). The perforation is oval in shape due to wear, pulling the edge outwards suggesting the coin was probably suspended as a pendant. Dimensions: 25.1mm diameter. 8.05g. Discussion: This is a coin which has been altered to become a pendant. The wear pattern of the loop suggests it was a well-worn pendant.
