Object type: FINGER RING

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An undatable (but probably Late Post-Medieval or Modern) gold ring, possibly a finger-ring or strap fitting, measuring 19.12mm in diameter (internal 16.72mm) and weighing 1.6g. The ring is rectangular in cross-section with signs of wear at opposing points, one one side only. I think the object is undiagnostic - the section is odd and this may not be a ring (Judy Rudoe pers.comm.)

A fragment from a gold ingot with sub-rectangular cross-section and a number of hammer marks on the two largest faces and granular breaks. There are a number of scuffs and scratches to the surface. The fragment has parallels with ingots previously identified as prehistoric date (including Trowse with Newton, Norfolk: 2002 T99; and the more substantial finger-shaped ingot from East Claydon, Buckinghamshire: 2013 T850). It can, on the balance of probabilities, be identified as being of prehistoric date. As an object of precious metal of prehistoric date, the fragment of a probable…

A miniature socketed bronze axe attached to a ring of gold wire. Miniature models of socketed axes in bronze are a well known type of object. They appear to be particularly common in Wiltshire and surrounding counties. Although a small number are known to have been made in the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age, the majority date to the Roman period. They are usually interpreted as votive models or amulets. Analysis of the gold from which the ring was made suggests it is a Roman object. Dimensions and metal content: Axe: length: 19mm; width across blade: 9mm. Ring: 11mm x 8mm, made from w…

There is an oval box-bezel with a narrow, flat retaining ring containing a repoussé gold plaque with clasped hands within a beaded border. The bezel is retained within a decorative flange with an ovolo pattern, and it is to this that the wires forming the structure of the hoop are attached. Now very crushed and distorted, the ring has a distinctive construction using thin sheet gold. Three tapering gold tubes are placed side by side, their lengthwise seams visible on the front. The tapered ends are hammered together to produce the narrow, flat hoop. The central tube has a roundish oval opening, one surviving side tube has a small and very narrow elliptical opening, and the other side would have matched, though it is now torn and crushed. These openings evidently contained settings, all now lost, naturally. They must have been bedded in an adhesive such as sulphur, as the …
