Description:  A complete Roman gold earring dating to circa AD 200-300. The object consists of a square or box-shaped setting with straight edges. The setting recesses contains a dark green to black squarely cut gemstone. The surface of the gemstone is abraded. The gemstone is surrounded by a flat, thin border around which a frame of oblique ridges in relief, giving the impression of twisted wire, is set. The reverse of the setting is flat. Description: A Roman gold ear-ring of rectangular form, seemingly complete, though distortion obscures most of the front face. The edges are lightly scalloped and the simple openwork decoration comprises a design based on small crescentic piercings. It is not possible to determine the form of the centre of the plate. The long tapered hook, also distorted, is fastened to the centre of a cruciform brace which is soldered to the back of the main plate. Discussion: The ear-ring is Allason-Jones Type 11 (Lindsay Allason-Jones Ear-rings in Roman Britain, Oxford 1989, p8). Ralph Jackson reco…

A Treasure find, Roman gold ear-ring of rectangular form, distorted and lacking its hook. It comprises two plates joined at the margins. The front face is embossed with a decorative swag border with tiny circular indentations. There is likely to have been a central setting in this face but this is no longer clear due to the central torn hole through both plates marking the former point of attachment of the hook.
