A medieval finger-ring consisting of a wide, flat hoop with an applied beaded-wire border, the beading now rather worn. There is no bezel. Within the border is a double-line inscription in lower-case black-letter script; it is relatively clearly readable for this type of script. + AMOUR : VAINT : TOUT FORS CEUR . DE . VILLAIN + AMOUR: EN: VOIE : SOULLAS : E YOIE The S in 'soullas' is in the shape of a C, which is not uncommon in black-letter inscriptions. The inscription means 'Love conquers all except the heart of a villain. Love sends solace and joy'. The finger-ring is …

Bronze Age gold ribbon ornament from Ilam, Staffordshire Description Two joining fragments form a parallel sided strip, or ribbon. One end is a neat flat-ended terminal with rounded corners, the other is a ragged break. The back is flat, while the front carries twenty-one very finely incised grooves aligned longitudinally. These are evenly spaced, but the outer rims are slightly broader in places. The grooves stop a little short of the terminal. In addition to the main tears, the strip is a little contorted with a partial tear from one side and two tiny drill holes have been not…

Gold ornamental finger-ring formed of a double strand of round-section wire worked into a knot at the front. There is nothing closely comparable in the collections of the BM, but this is most likely to be late 19th or early 20th century in date.

This gold ring is formed of a heavy band which has been highly polished, especially on the exterior. The interior is inscribed in upper case: ADVISED CHOYCE ADMITS NO CHAINGE. According to Joan Evans (English Posies and Posy Rings, Oxford 1931), this inscription is recorded in 1674. However the placing of the letters within the field is unusual as is the appearance of some of the letters and the scrape marks on the interior surface. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface indicates a composition consistent with a pre-19th century date; the soft dark material found i…

Length of gold rod with octagonal cross-section, bifacially cut at one end, the other end having a plain terminal. The piece is bent. Length 85mm; thickness 5mm; weight 2.7 grams. Identification: Analogies occur in the Bronze Age hoard of 42 gold pieces from Fitzleroi Farm, W. Sussex which included a number of elements including small complete rings and fragments of other ornament types. Octagonal- section rods were present. The analysis would be acceptable for a Bronze Age date with the proviso that the silver content is rather high. Given the lack of any datable association it is no…
