The ear ring is made of sheet gold and appears to have been originally cylindrical which tapers slightly to the upper edge. The ear ring or pendant is now crumpled and incomplete as the means of suspension is missing. The outer face is decorated with a repeating motif of a high-relief pellet with a small triangle above, both within a high-relief droplet shaped border. The lower edge of the earring is decorated with a band of low-relief cross-hatching. The upper edge is particularly crumpled, but may be decorated with a single ridge. The object is either an ear ring or pendant dat…

A gold chain and pendant of Roman date. The chain is of a single figure-of-eight looped form (as Johns 1996, 195-6). The gold wire is circular in section and the length of chain is composed of 27 looped wire links. The lower loop of each link is set at 90 degrees to that above and below it. The upper end of the chain terminates in a penannular wire loop with a short section of wire twisted 6 times around its upper end. The lower end of the object terminates in a tear drop or leaf-shaped pendant which is attached via an integral lentoid attachment loop with double collar below. The p…

A circa 2nd to 3rd century AD gold pendant, ovoid, set with a blue-grey glass paste intaglio, very worn, pitted and devitrified. The setting has a central rib and all that remains of the attachment is a single gold filigree loop. The intaglio depicts a robed seated figure facing right, holding a sceptre in his right hand and an uncertain object in the left. The figure may represent Jupiter but is too worn to be certain. A parallel for the intaglio can be found in Henig 2007, no. 10. References Henig, M., 2007. A Corpus of Roman Engraved Gemstones from British Sites: With a New P…

A Roman sard intaglio set in a gold mount with a loop for suspension. This is a small classical gem of debased style, dating from the third or fourth century A.D. It depicts a seated figure, probably Dea Roma, with helmet, spear, and shield. The stone is one of the sard variety and is enclosed in a gold mount with pearl border and flat gold back, fitted with a broad fluted loop for suspension. This intaglio requires no comment; it is one of many similar objects which have survived from ancient times, and been found by later generations and turned into ornaments. The gold mount ap…

A slightly tapering tube with coiled wire decoration attached to it near the wider end and about two-thirds of the way down. The wider end is closed by a flat plate, secured from coming out by the ends of the tube being bent over. The plate now sits at an angle, with one side pushed slightly down the tube, but it would appear that it originally sat square to the end of the tube. Attached to the plate is a small loop, of fairly flat cross-section. The tube is bent slightly to one side towards its narrower end, the edges of which are folded in. It seems likely that it is broken at this …

A Roman solid gold pendant in the shape of a phallus. The pendant has a broken and distorted grooved suspension loop and a simple representation of the male genitals, comprising testicles (one broken and missing) and erect penis, the glans depicted by a demarcating groove. The pendant is similar to, though more rudimentary than, another solid gold example from Braintree, Essex (ESS-0CDDC1; Treasure case PEE 81). A more finely detailed hollow gold example has also been reported from Hillingdon, Norfolk (NMS-94CA46; 2011 T78). The phallus was a powerful apotropaic symbol throughout th…

A gold pendant. Treasure reference number 2011 T592. The object is highly decorative and in a good state of preservation. The object is cuboid, hollow and displays damage at one end and also on the base. The cuboid is constructed primarily by three sheets of gold; a rectangular base plate, a long strip of gold angled to form the sides, and a open rectangular top containing a green gem setting. The setting is flat, rectangular and now pushed slightly downwards into the hollow body as a result of damage sustained post-deposition. The sheet gold side panels are stippled and decorated w…

A gold pendant in the shape of a phallus. Straight, oval sectioned, hollow, formed from sheet metal soldered together lengthways, rounded at the terminal with a small aperture left open at either end. A separate transverse loop formed from triple ribbed sheet is soldered into position at the top, with separately applied solid globular testicles to either side. Separately applied wire with irregular transverse grooves on the underside (perhaps to act as keying for the solder) defines the edge of the foreskin. Length (including loop) 21.5mm. Width at testicles 10mm. Width 3.5 x 4.5mm. W…

A small gem-set gold pendant comprising a translucent purple oval glass gem, of plano-convex cross-section, set in an oval gold frame 2.3mm wide, encircled by a beaded gold wire. The beading is very neat and regular. There is no backplate to the pendant, allowing the gem to be seen from both faces. The suspension loop, made from a tapered gold strip, is quite rudimentarily attached to the frame and is atypically orientated (running front to back rather than side to side), may have been an ancient repair. The lack of a backplate rules out an early-medieval date and the pendant is proba…

A gold solidus of the emperor Theodosius I struck at Milan between 378 and 387 (Roman Imperial Coinage vol. IX, no. 5f or 8b). The coin has been fitted with a ribbed suspension loop, also of gold, at the 12 o'clock position on the obverse (6 o'clock on the reverse) in order for it to serve as a pendant. This process is well known from the early Saxon period when many Roman gold coins were thus treated. Coin dated to 378-87, suspension loop added from the fifth to early seventh century. Obv. A gold and probably rock crystal small pendant. The pendant comprises an Irregularly shaped clear bead with vertical perforation. There is a strand of gold wire threaded through the perforation and one end is curled to form a loop and the twisted round on itself twice. Below the bead the wire terminates in five pellets. Curator's report: Small pendant, probably rock crystal suspended on a thin gold wire with a cluster of 5 small sold beads at the base. This may be an element of an earring or brooch or item of general jewellery. This object has been examined by …

Gold pendant in very good condition, length 31mm, width 16mm, thickness 2mm. Appears complete. Delicate repousse heads decorate both sides, apparently identical, possibly Medusa. Possibly used in this case as a charm against the evil eye. Almost certainly Roman.

A Roman gold phallic pendant. The pendant has a substantial grooved suspension loop and a detailed representation of the male organ with testicles and erect penis, the latter with glans penis and urethra. In the hollow between the testicles there is faint evidence of pubic hair. Unusually the shaft of the penis bends downwards (rather than straight or even upwards) and is decorated on both sides with a series of diagonal grooves along almost its entire length. The pendant appears to have been cast with the suspension loop open as a flat strip. The goldsmith finished the object by clos…
