A slightly tapering gold tube with coiled wire decoration attached to it near the wider end and about two-thirds of the way down. The wider end is closed by a flat plate, secured from coming out by the ends of the tube being bent over. The plate now sits at an angle, with one side pushed slightly down the tube, but it would appear that it originally sat square to the end of the tube. Attached to the plate is a small loop, of fairly flat cross-section. The tube is bent slightly to one side towards its narrower end, the edges of which are folded in. It seems likely that it is broken at …

2. (KKGF 03 (205). sf 234).Incomplete necklace. The necklace is constructed in the same manner as no. 1, although the terminal, of which only the hook part survives, has a rectangular sheet metal cover plate wrapped around it. The chain is irregularly interspersed with a series of cut stones: there are 10 reddish-brown polyhedral faceted garnets, two disc-shaped garnets, and three cylindrical emeralds of different sizes. It is possible that some of the beads were added to substitute missing originals, with the ten faceted garnets perhaps representing the original stones and the other,…

Roman gold jewellery component, from either an ear-ring or perhaps a bracelet or necklace. The surviving fragment consists of two identical decorative elements, one above the other, formed of two layers of sheet gold probably soldered together; each consists of a plain backing plate and a hollow repoussé upper plate in the form of two stylised opposed birds. Each bird has a pellet eye, a ribbed beak and bodies composed of a series of parallel ribs to represent feathers. The decorative elements are well preserved, with the right-hand side of the lower element bent slightly upwards. …

A Roman gold gem-set oval mount. The rubbed-over oval box setting is encircled by a decorative flange with a symmetrical petal motif. Two small projecting open circular rings, one at either end of the long axis of the mount are fused to the back of the flange. One has been torn open, together with a slight localised distortion of the adjacent part of the flange. The oval gem appears translucent, with a very pale lilac-brown colouration. Its front face, convex and polished, is slightly worn. A bulge in the back of the box setting indicates that the back face of the gem is also convex. …

Treasure case 2010 T527: Brewood area, Staffs. A Roman gold necklace link. The plain wire oval frame, looped at both ends, encloses a central bar and double-pelta motif made from filigree beaded wire. Clear signs of wear are visible on the internal distal end of the fastening loops. This is probably a small link from a composite gold necklace interspersing simple links like this one with gems or gem-set components (c.f. Marshall 1911, 2730 and C.M. Johns 1976, 'A Roman gold and emerald necklace from Canon Street, London', Antiquaries Journal 56, 247). For individual links see e.g…
