Gold finger ring of Post-Medieval date. The hoop has a thin D-shaped cross-section, and is plain on the exterior. The interior carries an inscription, beginning on the hoop and continuing across the bezel. The inscription is in Lombadic lettering and reads: I PRESENT THE ABSENT The hoop widens slightly as it approaches the shoulders, which carry four raised knops forming a cross. The shoulders end in a raised line, defining a cuff before the bezel depicting two joined hands crowned by two ducks each side of a possible crown. Traces of white enamel survive on the ducks and the hands.

A miniature socketed bronze axe attached to a ring of gold wire. Miniature models of socketed axes in bronze are a well known type of object. They appear to be particularly common in Wiltshire and surrounding counties. Although a small number are known to have been made in the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age, the majority date to the Roman period. They are usually interpreted as votive models or amulets. Analysis of the gold from which the ring was made suggests it is a Roman object. Dimensions and metal content: Axe: length: 19mm; width across blade: 9mm. Ring: 11mm x 8mm, made from w…

Gold ring with plain exterior, inscribed inside in lower case: Noe recompence but love, and stamped with maker's mark 'WG'. Note: Such rings are difficult to date precisely from the shape or inscription alone, but in this instance we can be certain that it pre-dates 1700. Firstly, the spelling of the word 'noe' with an 'e' was common in the 17th century. Secondly, the maker's mark has been identified as that of William Gough I of Marlborough, active about 1620-70: see T A Kent, West Country Silver Spoons and their makers 1560-1750 (London, 1992), pp. 93-94. Mr Kent, an authority on …

A gold Bronze age bracelet. In its current form, this is a roughly annular band with a small overlap. One end is a slightly thickened terminal of thin crescentic shape, the other is a thin, wavy edge most likely the product of the reworking of a broken end. It can be assumed that the original form was a penannular bracelet with two matching thickened terminals and a broad gently C-shaped band section, which survives in the reworked form. Remodelling after the loss of one terminal involved pulling the two ends together to overlap and tying them together with a thread (not surviving) pa…

Date: 17th century Description: Gold posy ring. D-shaped hoop which is slightly misshapen. Inscribed to the inside 'the love Is true that I O U x'. Preceding the inscription are the remains of a word, which appears to have been rubbed off. All that can be discerned are flourishes of the initial capital, possible 'T', and an end letter, possibly 'e'. Following the inscription are remnants of a punch, which is likely to be a maker's mark, although this is unidentifiable.
