A Medieval finger ring, the hoop of D section. This is decorated on the internal and external surfaces with flowers and leaves, interspersed with the words of an inscription in French in black-letter lower-case letters. On the outside this reads + tant que murai and on the inside + vouz ceroire. This is likely to mean "Until I die I will be yours". This sentiment suggests that the ring may originally have served as a marriage ring. The finger ring is gold and dates from the late fourteenth or the fifteenth century. Update, August 2016: Malcolm Jones adds "The word read as murai …

Length of gold rod with octagonal cross-section, bifacially cut at one end, the other end having a plain terminal. The piece is bent. Length 85mm; thickness 5mm; weight 2.7 grams. Identification: Analogies occur in the Bronze Age hoard of 42 gold pieces from Fitzleroi Farm, W. Sussex which included a number of elements including small complete rings and fragments of other ornament types. Octagonal- section rods were present. The analysis would be acceptable for a Bronze Age date with the proviso that the silver content is rather high. Given the lack of any datable association it is no…

This gold ring is formed of a heavy band which has been highly polished, especially on the exterior. The interior is inscribed in upper case: ADVISED CHOYCE ADMITS NO CHAINGE. According to Joan Evans (English Posies and Posy Rings, Oxford 1931), this inscription is recorded in 1674. However the placing of the letters within the field is unusual as is the appearance of some of the letters and the scrape marks on the interior surface. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface indicates a composition consistent with a pre-19th century date; the soft dark material found i…

Treasure case 2008 T778: Gold posy ring A thin gold band, rounded on exterior, inscribed inside in lower case: 'When this you see remember mee'. The lettering style is one that continues into the 18th century and in the absence of a maker's mark there is not enough evidence to confirm that this is more than 300 years old. As the ring can not be securely dated to pre-1709 it falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996. 2009 T97. Description: A gold, circular-sectioned wire ring, now bent out of shape. When placed on a surface it is slightly undulating but essentially flat. Discussion: This object could represent the misshapen remains of a bent, V-shaped finger ring of a type which is rare but known from the Iron Age. The closest parallel would be a ring from Park Brow, Sompting, West Sussex, dating from 400-200 BC. However, because of the distorted nature of the object it is impossible to be certain of this identification. Compare two certain examples of V-shaped middle Iron Age finger-rings a…
