A Merovingian gold tremissis; no parallel in Belfort or Prou. The mint is uncertain; the coin appears to read OTAREGCA but this does not match any known mint. The moneyer however is Deairenasea, who is also known from the mint Plailly, (Oise) France (see, for example, EMC 2007.0069). Late 6th or 7th century, c. 590-670 AD.

A gold tremissis, struck by the Visigoths in Gaul, imitating a Roman Imperial coin of Zeno (474-91). It was probably struck, c. 475-490. No exactly similar coin of this type is known to the British Museum, but further research is needed. Most copies of this period have the mintmark as CONOB or CONO. In this case it is dot N dot. This derives from the ONO of CONOB. There is one coin in the British Museum of Julius Nepos (474-5) with mintmark dot dot M dot dot which derives from COMOB (Oxborough Hoard 2003, R. Abdy). A gold Early Medieval coin; probably a Merovingian tremissis dating from the 6th or 7th century, 500-700 AD. It has a diameter of 10.92mm, thickness 1.40mm, weight 1.11g. The design seems too large for the flan, so possibly it was copied from a larger coin of c.20mm diameter. There is a border defined by solid lines on one face, containing curved line, straight lines and pellets. The central motif is an unintelligible group of curved lines and pellets. The other face is weakly struck and possibly bears a crude bust and blundered legend.

The tremissis is a coin type widely issued by the Merovingian Franks in this period, but also produced by the Anglo-Saxons and Frisians. Such coins were produced in fairly good gold at the beginning of the century, but with the gold contained declining as the century progressed, with the gold increasingly replaced by silver. An Early Medieval gold coin; a 7th-century tremissis that was minted at Dorestad in the Netherlands by Rimoaldus in c.600 - 675 AD. The coin has a diameter of 12.7mm and is 1.3mm thick. It weighs 1.3g. For references see Grierson and Blackburn's 'Medieval European Coinage' (vol 1) p.137; and A.N. Zadoks-Josephus Jitta (1961) 'De Eerste Muntslag te Duurstede', Jaarboek voor Munt-en Penningkunde 48, 1-14 (Plate 1, no. 3). This coin is probably the first of this type to have been found in England.

Gold mid 7th-century tremisssis, probably struck in France c AD 630. the blundered inscription, in pseudo-lettering, is inspired by the coins of Chalon, which have CA for Chalon either side of a Byzantine cross.
